Playstation as a CD playback device?

No.Do you mean you are supplying the high voltage where it needs the low?
Both circuits as shown, appeared to function and measure properly, until they are connected to the PS1. Then the PS1 either doesn't respond at all or doesn't work properly.
I got it working by taking the output voltage from C9 and adjusting it down to 3.6v. Thereby bypassing the last stage. (R6 is a variable resistor in my circuit.)
When i get time i'll rebuild the last stage on a separate board and see if it makes a difference. Might be easier to see if i went wrong somewhere.
Much to learn there is.

That seems to be pretty much spot on.WTF WTF WTF, hungry, tired. WTF WTF WTF, hungry, tired. WTF WTF WTF, hungry, tired. WTF WTF WTF, hungry, tired.
At a guess
Anyway, i rebuilt the second regulation stage on a separate piece of stripboard. It outputs 4v instead of the quoted 3.6, but it does now work with the PS1.
I think the zener might be to blame as it operates at 4v rather than 4v3. I only have two of these and they're both much the same. Anyone know if this is common?
Not too bothered because there is further regulation on the PS1 motherboard apparently, and there's no sign of overheating. Also the LM317s are running slightly cooler than before.
Next step to re box it all.
