Sacked off the vdh cable and put an order in for some of the fisual cable colin linked to, only cost about 35 quid for 8 metres and postage so cant grumble at that.
Ill end up with a 5m run and a 3m run.
First cable of any type ive bought in over 20 years. All the interconnects are either ancient inherited ones of made up from van damm xke or some blue shark wire that greg donated a couple of years ago. Which reminds me that i could do with sorting some of those out as some are knackered....

Ali is sending over some of the mil spec cable he has so it will be interesting to see if my cloth ears can tell a blind bit of difference

That was quick, the fisual cable arrived this morning.
Quite a hefty cable, but nice and bendy and easy to work with
Slight balance shift in the sound, slightly smoother top end and slightly less forward in the mid.
Interestingly the channel balance is less biased to the right so i wonder if i had a dodgy connection on the left hand speaker, or the damage i noticed (or some i didn't notice) to the monster cables that prompted this change in the first place was causing issues.
I have just used bare wire connections because the plugs i took off the other cable are just as grotty as the cables are
Good shout colin, these cables are perfectly good cables for bugger all money

Similarly, any recommendations for cable to make up interconnects?

The last ones I made up used SC Tricone mk2 in a nice shade of green.

It's not DIY, but I just run Fisual's Havana for all my line-level connections; costs a bit more than making it yourself, but it's a [very] neat job, available in custom lengths, usually with next-day delivery and ticks most of the boxes if you care about 'hi-fi features'. I don't -I was just bone-idle. And to be honest, I quite like the appearance, insofar as you can like the appearance of a piece of wire -Emilia Clarke it is not.

A bit OT, but I had a Topping D90 to try with my Pi streamer. I usually use a hi-fi berry hat dac. The D90 was very odd sounding, weird timing, disconnected sound. I couldn't get into the sound at all. Even plonked SWIMBO down for a listen and she described similar without any priming.

Then got the D90 owner to give me a better USB cable. Blimey, what a difference. All was right with the world.

Upshot though after a week, I didn't feel the need for a D90.

When we say 'a better USB cable' is that an euphemism for 'one that conforms to the specifications' (or isn't broken in some way)? ;)

Humour aside, I don't doubt you encountered some differences, because they can exist when there is an issue in that regard. And as a terrible confession: I have a Havana USB cable. Albeit only because I needed one, it cost the grand total of £5, and is a visual match to my other interconnects, which due to the limited space of my desk-based setup are partly visible.

I seem to remember having a discussion on this subject with James a few years ago and it wasn't that simple.

No, I gather there is a lot of junk out there that ignores the basic protocols.

I’d be very interested in anything you have on this as I am currently planning a complete rewire and connections for my network system. Thanks in anticipation.
