Decca'd at last
#1 Decca'd at last
I've had a decca professional arm for about 5 years, about 2 years ago i decided to let John Wright service the cartridge as I heard good reports about the old decca's. I have a blue somewhere but didn't really rate it, but I thought I'd give this one a new lease of life. Just to hear one properly in my system.
And these last 2 years have really flown..
Any way after a couple of days of avoiding hardwood dust I've finally got this running, I've raked out a 301 for a change too.
Spent a little time checking and oiling it.. all seems ok I'm on the 2nd side of 'solid air' and quite enjoying it.
It's all very much breaking in, but my 1st thoughts are open and a lively, liquidy sound if that makes sense, but I'll reserve judgement for a few days
Thinking about it it's 5 years since the phono was last used, so it's about time I played a few records.
Only downside is turning the bloody records over.

The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

So what's the cartridge there ( exactly ) Steve ?
At a distance it looks a bit like an early SPU.
Only criticism there is that you've got a rather late issue copy of Solid Air - you need the 'Palm Tree' label one

That'd correct Steve it's a mark 1 which I believe is slightly more desirable, but then I've read that once John wright does his thing, they are as good as they get.
Thats correct solid air is a newer pressing Mark, it was what I used for setting the arm height, as in the 1st record that I pulled from the cupboard !
I was up till 1.00 am last night,
As usual once 11.30 passed everything seems to sound better, but it left me quite impressed.. especially with something from the early 60s

Ive stopped with the old cartridges these days, it stands to reason that a good portion of old carts are worn out these days and even a nos one can have crusty rubber parts so can be inadvisable to use.
However the ones that have been refurbished by a specialist are still tempting. The c4e is supposed to be lovely when its been put back to spec
Nice to see it being used, you'll have to try the thorens and the oracle in now though steve and whatever other decks you have lurking in the loft....

I’ve a c4e that I bought needing refurbishment, must get round to sending it to John. As you say Ant, supposed to be very good.
Mind you, just snapped up a NOS Kiseki Blue NS that came up at a decent price..

Steve probably has a kiseiki in the aladdins cave, right next to the 4300a's
