I started on an old battered Quad 405-2 in December last year, so today feel flushed with success as it makes a noise and oscilloscope waves look good.

I originally followed Nicks modification description but for reasons I forget, probably related to the position and effect of C8 described in the Keith Snook mods, I went down that path

The case is pretty tatty and has some holes I'll need to fill in. I can't find a reference to the paint Quad used anywhere so I may spray painting it satin black or another part of me is thinking further investment and getting it powder coated in say orange gloss, as I have no amplifiers in that colour. Glad of anyone's thoughts on the case refurb

Good effort! Rough case, as you say, but nice challenge!

If theres no paint code available perhaps take the case to a paint shop to see if it can be colour matched? Should be able to get a rattle can made up

Regarding the holes in the chassis... Maybe just a blanking plate? If you're good with sheet work, you could cut out and patch as per rust repair in car footwell etc.

Am I good with sheet work, no experience whatsoever...I'm going to just fill them best I can and learn from it.

I have what I hope is a good guide in

Just to be a completist for once here is the outcome. Not perfect but the 405-2 isn't now disgracing itself up on the track. Still the heat sinked brick it ever was, but one that rightly won design awards. The matched paint colour is far closer than the photos suggest. The holes I filled on the back panel despite some to and fro are still slightly visible but it'll do

So how does it sound after all the Snook Mods (405–2 PCBs to DCD Mod–3), no idea. It sounds very good indeed, comparison to how it was before it was modded? (Korg B1 pre btw) no idea too long ago, its a step forward.

I have vintage integrated or receiver amps I will listen to and enjoy over the more perfect sounding Korg B1/ Quad 405-2 but I flip back to what is now my 'reference' system.

The PAT sticker comes from its past life as a DJ back up amp. I can give no sane reason for it being left in place
