Everything in the automotive industry is about saving the last penny. They were probably losing out on leasing batteries. I was shocked a few years ago when working with a German welding specialist, that Porsche still spot weld their cars, as for their small production runs it wasn’t worth the investment, to change to laser seam welding. The joke they told was you could always tell when a Porsche was parked with one wheel the pavement.. the door sticks... they worked for the VAG group too.
On a sort of linked subject - got a cold call about the latest environmental grants... when I asked about a power bank for my PV array... there isn’t a grant for them nor for heat pumps.. just insulation.

Strange about the Tesla batteries.. that was the reason I was given for the 100% price hike.
AFAIK, Tesla have never leased batteries. And what 100% price hike?
