#1 Simple to achieve Projects ( That Might Prove Useful)

Post by JohnG »

Surfing the Net, is becoming a accompanied with a Cuppa Pastime.

I've mainly been looking at OB's and every so often a 'off the search' discovery of a Simple to achieve, and what might prove useful,
DIY Device is to be seen.
I'm sure I am not the only one stumbling on such devices, left think that looks doable.

I'll kick this off, with the Pintrest Link.

Looks like the uprights move from the vertical as the drill is moved downwards, but might be an optical delusion ?

No I think you're right Phil. More bracing should solve it.

There are some good projects like this on YouTube. One guy has a drill press that allows the drill to move back and forth and side to side. Very clever.

I needed to alter a old hardwood amp chassis, the original volume control didn't fit well... the new tkd pot would not fit at all. I was wondering how to cut the wood out, but the router would not fit in the chassis.
I slept on it last night... which worked as this morning I had the thought if a router cutter in the angle drill would work.. it took some holding, it worked a treat, followed by some small round sanding wheels, cleaned the job up very well. Made a top plate too
Back to soldering tomorrow

Phwwwoooaaaarrrr! Tool envy!

I could do with one of them angle drills right now, I've a got a stud I need to drill out from the inside of the GT250 frame. A previous owner has had an 'ooopsie' and managed to snap off the nearside riders footrest leaving the mounting stud in part of the threaded boss in the frame, its too tight between the frame to engine mounts to get a 'normal' drill in there, meh!

Drilling from the outside runs the risk of damaging the welded on boss, erks.

Right angle drill adapters have got me out of trouble a few times, but they're not always easy to hold

Hi Dave
If the broke of stud is a threaded, it is looking like a Left Hand Drill Bit and Heliocoil Stud Extractor.
Heating it will help when freeing.

How about making up a plate with a hole in it that can be clamped to the frame and be used to keep the drill bit centered while you drill the starting hole for the stud extractor?

Agreed.

If you have not got this sorted by the time the restrictions end speak to me. :)

When I had to remove a damaged locking wheel nut on my Volvo I used a special drill to make the pilot hole, a lockmakers drill from memory. I might still have it somewhere.

And, Nicks suggestion re the guide is top hole.

Or another option could be, and possibly a cheaper option ?
If the hole isn't blind, i.e there is access to the stud on the other side of the plate the sleeve is welded on to.
A Zinc Plated, Cheese Head Allen Bolt with a head diameter less than the Internal Diameter of the sleeve can be used to drive the stud out.
This could be fastened into the stud on the opposite end of the stud as shown in the image through drill/tapping,
in a similar manner to using a Stud Extractor.
By heating the stud, and tightening the Allen Bolt, it should be possible to release/remove the Stud.

I mentioned Zinc Plated, as this bolt will be easier to drill out is a accident happens :salute:

I've removed a few stuck broken bolts. My way of choice is to build up the top of the bolt with weld as john suggested, grind a fine slot in the weld, then clamp a heavy hexagon screwdriver bit into it (if its a small item I use a vice) then put a spanner on the hexagon, once it cracks the thread, slightly relax the clamp to maintain just sufficient tension for the next fraction of a turn.
The welding is good as heating the bolt can free the threads slightly.
I use one of those 1mm cutting disks in the angle grinder for the slot and make sure the weld goes into the centre of the bolt (for obvious reasons)... and use plenty of current for good weld penitration.
Best of luck.
