Eventually bit the bullet. Bought a project 1993 Defender 90 200TDi. 150K on the clock.

Has a 10y/o galvanised chassis, new clutch, gearbox & transfer box. Spare set of wheels and a box of new spares that the previous owner hadn't got round to using yet (new seals, bumpers, ignition switch, gaskets, special tools, workshop manuals, filters, polybushes, bits for the prop shafts etc.)

It was up in Stowmarket, where conveniently a long-standing mate of mine lives who happens to be a complete LR geek - he very kindly went along with another mate (who has 6 LRs) to check it out. Had a good hour of video conference and they checked all the typically dodgy bits and took it for a drive etc. Both said that if I wasn't buying it, they would. Previous owner was a motor geek who has some other beautiful projects which are now his focus.

Gear change was very vague...

Looking at the old turret, it's easy to see why...

Not that anyone is interested, but I took the rear spare wheel carrier off ibn Stoffel yesterday... it was in a disgusting state and is going off to be shotblasted and powder coated...

This is what was underneath - back door needs some work I suspect...

This is typical Landrover electrochemical corrosion - a mild steel plate attached to a aluminium alloy skin over a mild steel frame.

Recipe for disaster, but pretty typical problem.

I'm new to this type of bodywork. I was thinking of chopping out the rot and Lumiwelding/HTS-2000 a patch in place... but some folk on the forums say that even a blowtorch near the aly skin is asking for trouble (ripple).

The old steel backing plate for the carrier has rotted and broken into several pieces, so I've cut a 4mm aluminium checker-plate replacement... A new rear carrier from Mantec is several 100 quid - shotblasting & powder coating the old one is about 50, plus I'll use electrolysis to remove the rust from the threads and mounting hardware, then nickel coat & yellow passivate...

Would welcome ideas!

Apparently you can fix Landrovers with gaffer tape and a DPM offcut... Just to keep a bit of the rain out, don't you know...

Took the old wheel carrier (which was completely rusted) to the paint shop. 50 quid cash for shotblast and satin black powder coat... vs. 200+ for a new one.

Had to use angle grinder and thin SS cutting disc to remove old bolts from the carrier brackets; they just weren't going to shift. I broke a socket and strained my back trying to shift them, even after soaking in WD for a while and heating with the blowtorch.

Struggled for 30 minutes getting nowhere; cut them all off in 10 minutes. Replacements will be SS.

Seems that after a lump hammer, the next best Landy tool is a 1/2" breaker bar...

I know I'm well out of touch, sold my last one about the time yours was being built...but...

there used to be a number of parts dealers around Wirksworth in Derbyshire. They dealt in used parts, panels, engines etc.and recon engines. My immediate thought was that if they still exist you might get a new rear door for £50 in reasonable condition...

just a thought...

no idea why, but Wirksworth seemed to be landrover central back in the day.

edit: well done in finding the number 1 tool.

Yep. Well out of touch I'm afraid!!!

A decent new rear door is about 250+ now. However, you can get galvanized ones complete with... HEATED REAR WINDOW !!! 8)

I'm sorely tempted by galvanized replacements..

I’m interested Nick, keep it coming. With flat alli panels like that have you thought of bonding patches into place?

Some before, during and after photos of cleaning up and powder coating the spare wheel carrier...

The stainless steel piston still needs a new o-ring and a rubber shock washer... (ordered) and the two small mounting back plates which are somewhat corroded will be stripped, zinc plated and passivated in due course... as will the rather rusty fixing thread on the piston...

The pitting left by the blasted-off rust is not severe enough to significantly weaken the mounting plate and will in any case be hidden by the wheel once mounted.
