#1 Fane 15" full range speaker

Post by Cressy Snr »

There could be quite a long timespan to this thread.

Plans are for a semi-permanent setup with a pair of Fane 15 inch triple cone full range sealed cabs; one each of the two room corners, either side of the fireplace. Once the front room remodel is done, they'll be the speakers we'll use for the duration.

These arrived this afternoon:

Corner or wall placement works with the 12" cabs and props up the bass end. I see no reason why it can't work with the 15s.

Yes, it was a nice parcel. :)

Just checking that they play. The top end is as good as the 12" version, so again,
no tweeter required (was that a Phil Collins album?)
These bigger drivers are again a true full-ranger for the over 50s

Although they are destined for a sealed corner unit like in the olden days, the TS parameters will also make these a superb open baffle driver. Get them on a baffle with a bass helper under them and they might be the only speaker you'd need.

I see your supper is ready Steve!

Your 12in equipped speakers look really nice Steve and it's good to see some creativity at work. Top stuff.

I've had my eye on those for all sorts of reasons. Interested to hear your thoughts as they break in and you get them in some boxes.

As of last Tuesday I am over 50 (!) and I can see a pair of these (or the 12"ers) in my future. :-)

Did they make them in 2002?
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Nice! I wonder why the rest of the world keeps mucking about with Lowthers when these exist.

Probably because the Thiele Small Parameters for the Fane 15" FR driver suggest it requires a sealed cabinet of internal size of at least 300 Litres for it to work to it's full potential and the fact the official manufacture published graph shows a near +13dB rising response from just over 1kHz to 8kHz that may require some form of notch filters to smooth out the response.

It'll be interesting how this design pans out for Steve. I think a 100L intended sealed cabinet design in corners may be a little optimistic.

I do hope this speaker project works out for you Steve.

I thought the same thing with the 12", as I posted earlier, but that seems to have defied the theory by the sound of it(what pun?)...

I too hope it works out, fingers crossed.
