Fane 15" full range speaker
#136 Re: Fane 15" full range speaker
You are probably right chris, all the boxes are ticked, rew sees usb codec, phantom power is on and the sig light reacts to the mic, but try and record anything and the plot looks the same.
Tried to record some finger clicks and the plot looks the same and the signal too quiet error comes up..
Pretty graphs though

hi Ant
if it's not impertinent, what were you trying to measure?

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
#138 Re: Fane 15" full range speaker
Nothing particular, just interested to see what the fr plots looked like
#139 Re: Fane 15" full range speaker
Ant,
It sounds like the analogue side is working fine, then.
Is REW set for Input 1?
Chris

Im not sure, im out right now so ill have to check when i get back in
#141 Re: Fane 15" full range speaker
Hmm. Set it to default input device and the program will work with the mic built into the laptop. But wont work with the mic and um2 interface.. ffs
#142 Re: Fane 15" full range speaker
Switched over to audacity to see if that program works with it, and that can record my finger clicks with no problem so the mic, um2 and mac can all see each other. So i am definitely doing something wrong

Have you got the mic plugged in to the DAC before switching it on? It's finicky about that. And have you set the input in REW to the mic? I recall having similar issues until I realised what I was doing wrong. Might not be the same at all, of course.
#144 Re: Fane 15" full range speaker
Ive lost the will to live with it tbh.
i can get audacity to work and react to the mic fine and give me a plot, cant get rew to do anything.
was only doing it out of curiosity and im just frustrated now so it can get left for another 12 months

Leave it for a couple of days and try again. I had what sounds like the same problem, I couldn't work our what my measurements weren't making sense. Then I realised it was using the laptop mic.
Add in the 1/12th octave smoothing and you'll be away. I learnt so much about what was going on, so don't give up.

Finally got somewhere with rew, with some help from our simon.
I still don't have an spl meter to set the levels, and I couldn't do the loopback test to measure the usb interface so these are not as accurate as they could be, but at least they look reasonable this time.
the left and right measurements are right on axis at 1m from the driver, the last one is measured where my earoles usually are

I couldn't figure out how to do anything with the mdat file outside rew so I had to use screen grabs before I went batty trying to get the files off as images.
There is probably a simple way to do it but I don't have the patience to find it.....
couple of holes in the response between 200 and 300hz, and one big one between 4 and 500hz which going by the individual speaker plots is some room cancellation where I am sat (the sofa sits back into a shallow alcove)?
some faffing with speaker positioning may influence that. Maybe.

Veeeery interesting as mike would say.
This plot is with the door to the stairs shut!?

less peaky at the bottom with the door open which I would not have ever thought about.
The left hand speaker is about a foot from the big unit that runs along the window wall so has plenty of stuff to reflect off, the right hand speaker has nothing to the right of it as it opens into the dining room

Progress!
It's worth turning on some smoothing in Preferences so the plots are easier to read.
There's a Capture button at the top left of the plot which will save the plot IIRC.

Yep, found the capture button Simon, the one that looks like a camera that I completely missed. Sometimes wonder if my eyes actually work...

If you're feeling brave you could increase the resolution of the y axis, SPL, say 0 to 100Hz. It'll be easier to see the real differences then.
