I'm continuing the subject of bbc streaming from the nothing in particular thread as it seems more relevant.

I changed the radio streams from iplayer to bbc sounds in LMS because of the imminent scare of bbc ceasing streams. All was well....until the damned pi has started buffering....

it's never buffered before...and it's been buffering on radio3 and radio 2 and now on paradise.....

the pi is wried(not wifi) and we have 50 mbits min download.....

the only change I've made is to change streams and store the links in my favourites in LMS....I'm suspicious

any body got any ideas to offer

Maybe have a second device also streaming from sounds at the same time, and see if that buffers when the pi does.

Is this on all BBC channels?

Radio 3 uses higher bandwidth than others as it's a higher quality stream. RP is popular but a tiny operation - they may simply have server capacity issues at certain times of the day, e.g. when the US is awake.

I know everyone knows this, but it's worth restating that if you're on a shared ISP service (even on fiber), your 50MBs bit rate may not equate to a equivalent data rate due to contention etc., especially in the evenings ... when the US wakes up. I've had real issues with this as many of my customers are in the US, so I switched to an FTTP ISP service that has no contention and is, bizarrely, cheaper than my old ADSL+ service. Even so I occasionally get buffering but I put this down to the provider's bandwidth, not mine - I see this on RP sometimes too - RP have a map of how many client are active on an interactive world map... interesting to watch how it changes over the day.

Most providers are pricing ADSL high now to try to persuade people to switch to FTTC or FTTP. Some won’t even offer ADSL any more if fibre’s available at the customer’s address.

the questions in your first paragraph were all answered in my earlier post #243. Particularly the rate of paradise which is the same as radio 3 quality.
My contention is that nothing has changed except the change to BBC sounds and the system has been working with my current ISP for the last few years with no buffering.

Apologies. Maybe it is something weird about the Pi.

I do get occasional buffering even with clients that have large amounts of excess horsepower and bandwidth, e.g my PCs, but they are windows, not Debian.

after I reported buffering yesterday I rebooted the pi and didn't encounter any more buffering.
I then reported the LMS version in reply to Neal's question so the pi had been running LMS v7.9 for 12 hours with no buffering so all I could do was conclude it was a glitch and the reboot had sorted it.

following Neal's post I then updated LMS to v8.2...all is good except...

when I select a radio station from my favourites menu it then takes me to a new menu which includes a selection called play. This menu wasn't present in v 7.9......

I'm still debating whether I think this is a positive step....

Pimoroni have RPi 4s 4GB in stock at £64 and 8GB ones in full kit form only for £112.

Only 1 per existing customer, but at least they have them at sensible prices.

Just bought another one for a project ..
