Very rarely, there was a very steep hill I came across where the Maxi just couldn't cope on its own so I applied 'Light Pedal Assistance' as its deemed but even a mahoosive climb like Wrotham Hill it seems to cope with pretty well. I'm just over 16st currently but it got me all the way up the hill yesterday at ~20mph. We 'did' Death Hill yesterday too at around 18mph towards the top, Rarrrrrrr!
To start it you're supposed to pedal and pull in the starting clutch/decompressor and the engine bursts into life but I've found it starts just fine using the nearside pedal as a kickstart. It's a flywheel magneto so you have to supply the initial power to get the bike to come to life.

Yeah, I was thinking along similar lines Mark, reflecting on the time I rode from Bath to Bristol and back with Mr Bass and wondering if we might do it again with him pacing - I think he would provide plenty of shelter!

... and we added the Two Tunnels loop onto the end, a good ride that was.
Doubt I'd fit through the tunnel nowadays.

Changing the tank on the AJS Cadwell, because I want it red. Oh my word – what a marathon – began the job on Wednesday, finally finished Friday. Then it wouldn't start... well to be exact, the electric start, wouldn't ... cue the switch cleaner ...

Yay-yas, I woz testing a new OneTigris Tangram, hoping it will replace my very ancient (and slowly disintegrating) Saunders Base Camp. Very similar, albeit the all-mesh inner is a bit more breezy at nights. But keeps the bugs out. Actually it has more legroom than the Base Camp so that's a plus as well as packing much smaller and lighter.
There, more than you were expecting ...

Very interesting Mike.
The other day I rode a Tempest Scrambler. I think the last bike of this sort of capacity I rode was a Bantam, so you can imagine the surprise which accompanied my introduction to the (pretend) AJS. My last Ajay was a 18S. I thought this a remarkable little machine and it sometimes was hard to remember it was only a 125. I thought it well balanced and it handled well, despite the knobbly front end. And 100mpg, excellent warranty and less then three grand . . what's not to like?
Despite being in my eighties, I'm not yet ready to give up the adolescent behaviour which my XBR allows me (potholes permitting), but when the time comes, I shall give this little machine very serious consideration for I liked it very much in spite of providing funds for the Chinese Communist Party. Of course the Cadwell doesn't really look anything like a 7R but it does have a visual appeal.
PS What's the gizmo poking out of the barrel on the n/s? Chain tensioner perhaps?
