Ha, its Fretless innits? If yes, then it deffo can play a more accurate Major 3rd interval than any of my basses can.

In our 'western tempered ' tuning system Maj3 intervals are slightly # IIRC from music theory lessons about 25 years ago. Brother Ed's fretless could play that interval true (accurate) .

that reminded me of David Pinnegar?...hope I have the name correct.....he came and went a couple of summers ago and vanished..He was promoting the use of antiquated tuning scales on pianos....fascinating!

Nope, A and A# are two different notes a semitone apart, we just happen to call one A and the other A# or Bb depending on how we feel.

If you wanted to get more notes from a guitar you could double up the string width every second string, so for example 17, 17, 13, 13, 10, 10 then tune every second string up 50 cents to allow you to play 24 tone music, but you might be mad to try.

<sound FX> Buzzer Technically over ruled! :)

The A# and Bb examples will sound the same natch because they have the same frequency. IMO their moniker is not about how we 'feel' , its about how we describe their position within a Key-centre, EG whether its # or b key. I don't know if musical rules (bah! I hated typing that) have changed but I was taught not to use # note descriptors in b-Key centres (or summat!).

Sounds very much like "how we feel" to me.

Just to borrow that. Thats only true if we are in a equally tempered world. If you want to spend a fun 10 minutes, start with A at 440Hz, and go up around the cycle of fifths until you get back to A, but use the justly tuned perfect fifth ratio of 3:2 drop down a octave when needed.

So

A = 440
E = 440 * 3 / 2 = 660
B = 660 * 3 / 2 = 990
F# = 990 * 3 / 2 = 1485 drop a octave 742.5

And so on and see how A doesn't equal A

Oh yeah...I think this is closer to where Nick is coming from in terms of tutelage...but as far as referring to any given note is concerned, I'm with DTB on this, i.e always refer to the key sig..no such thing as a # in a b sig.

I still haven't mastered the art of inserting a youtube link and getting a graphic......pah!

I think my stage piano has the ability to re tune but I don't know whether it allows individual notes to retune or just the whole instrument....I will consult the manual if I can find it and report back....don't hold your breath though cos I haven't touched it(the piano) in over ten years....
