#1 Sealing MDF edges or 'end grain' equivelent.

Post by Greg »

I have some rear port blanking panels made of MDF to convert some WAD KLS3 MkII's from their designed rear ported version to the original front ported MkI version.

What is the best solution to use to seal the edges of these panels? The panel face will be subjected to satin grey paint. I have Sanding Siealer I could use. Ultimately I want to avoid swelling caused by the application of a sealing liquid, so what's best for this, please?

I'd say eds solution of epoxy resin, or alternatively you can use heavy primer coats and flat it back. Other solution is edge banding if there is enough space

Diluted pva has worked for me in the past. Just seals without swelling.

Hi Greg,

We use this product when using mdf in cabinet and kitchen making..
Zinnser BIN shellac primer, most paint suppliers stock it, very good and easy to sand.

I was going to suggest MDF sealant, then sand paper smooth. Should be suitable for painting then. YMMV.

I use Rustins MDF sealer. Two coats on edges then sand smooth.
