Aye. It happens. I might get chance to chat to Dave should he attend Nebo. If he cares to that is?

Only a couple of days to go before Nebo 8. Really looking forwards to being an exhibitor leaving the organising to Rich Britton. Hope to see some of you there.

I hope you have a great meet up Steve, I'm sure Rich will do a good job of organising, the venue looks great from the pics on aos...
I would have loved to attend again, but have too much on at the moment I did not think retirement would be so busy
Cheers

Random info for today:

Rape is a member of the cabbage (Brassicaceae) family, i.e. is cruciferous.

Now, this is not a bad thing in itself - as has been pointed out, the oil is good and the "cake", what's left after the oil has been extracted, makes good cattle feed. The fields of bright yellow flowers are also strangely attractive (to some)...

...however, the nectar is like lager to a Millwall fan - bees will fly miles for it, they can't stay away, because of the strong nectar flow... and the honey they make has two problems:
  • It tastes and smells faintly of cabbage
  • it sets like concrete (crystallizes) in the comb
The first is a matter of personal taste (I dislike it), but the second is a pain to beekeepers as it's almost impossible to extract without destroying the comb and the bees themselves can't use it as they need sugar in a solution, not crystallized.

Do you suffer this in your own hives Nick ?

Regrettably, yes to a degree - you can't avoid Oil Seed Rape (OSR) where my bees are in the UK - bees fly in about a 3 mile radius and there's generally OSR in the circle around us.

You can manage the situation by changing the supers (the honey boxes) when OSR is in flower, then putting the previous ones back on afterwards - this means that the honey in the combs is not contaminated - the OSR honey you have to extract really quickly and keep separately because it will make ordinary honey set like concrete too if mixed in.

I've just been talking to a bee keeper who is surrounded by rape. He takes two honey crops a year. The rape one is nearly ready - before the rape honey crystallises! Happy days.

I don't know if you're aware Richard but Nebo is ~264 miles away from your house, I know you said Owston is too far away for a visit at 192 miles.
