My head hurts reading that lot.

I was actually thinking the ubutu would replace windows of it's own volition when I tried to install it. Maybe it willl when I get a clean disk.

My puter doesn't easilty let me itno the bios (well I haven't figured the necessary key presses yet)

Yes, ignore those links Paul, that was for Darren and his USB drive.

Do you need to keep the contents of the disk, or do you have it all backed up?

If you can start with a clean disk (better for a XP install as well), then it "should" be simpiler. I would have tought there wound be an option to make the ubuntu install format the disk partition and start from scratch.

If you can get the CD to boot up to it's desktop then it does give the option to partition the hard drive during the installation process. You can do all the usual stuff like picking the partition size, customise the install etc.

Paul: when you created the ISO image CD did it verify itself to find all these corrupt files?

I loaded onto a Cd but got the message

"Your CPU does not support long mode. Use a 32bit distribution"

So I gather I need the other download then. Off to get it now.

I noticed the CD is a live version so no need to load onto the hard Drive?
Or is that a compromise?

I also noticed if I press F12 on bootup my comp will allow me any drive to boot from.

I downloaded thee correct instalation

ran the live cd all looked good

The install said I could load to a USB drive, great I can leave the C: drive intact.

Wrong... I now haave aa useeleess computor thaat boots to an error 21 message.

I can't reload it or do bugger all with it now...!!!

Brill...just what I neeeded..

Find somewher to host the image, then attach a link to the URL. if you can't find a host, mail them to me and I will put them on the server.

a bit OT for this thread but I was almost sold on phpbb for hosting the international schools project I mentioned before....this could be a hanging point as its fundamental to reqmnts.......do you happen to know if its in the pipeline for a future release........

OK so I did another image and this time it tested itself as 100% OK.

Then it booted from cd fine, then I told it to install itself, got past decision of how to partition the drive. I chose take the ferkin lot cause i don't want any of that old rubbish left thank you.

So it got 15% done and now for the last 35 minutes it has remained at 15% the mouse doesn't move and the clock has remained at 7:33 at is at that right now. Neither drive has been running just the fan and the screen is lit but frozen.

Am I to assume it has hung, and that I have to start the whole process again?

OK at 8.33 1 hr later with absolutely no disk activity I decided it was hanging for sure, so am back to square one for the 4th time.

This time it has been 5 minutes at 15% trying to read file system, clock stopped, but this time it is acessing the hard disk and the cd alternately, so fingers crossed.

I tell you what though, windows xp loads like a rocket and flawlessly compared to this.

I wonder if its tried to go into power down mode. Maybe restart and go into the bios and disable any power save features.

When you demoved the partitions, was there a samll partition, its often the case that thats used by the bias to save to on sleeping.

Not sure, think it was just hanging because I had the wireless dongle plugged in and it couldn't make sense of it.

Anyhow this time round no dongle and it has got passed that stage and is continuing to access the disk so I know it is processing, a lot more encouraging I have a good feeling about it.

Yes it's now partitions formatting, exciting stuff!!!!
