#1 DAC 5687 vs. 6463
I guess this one is mainly for Nick .
Just something I spotted while browsing the Audio Note site ( as you do ) looking at the DACs.
I hadn't spotted before that the DAC 4 'Sig' and DAC 5 's use 6463 double-triodes ( in PP ) in the output stage rather than 5687's .
http://www.audionote.co.uk/products/dig ... l_01.shtml
Of course they are NOS Telefunkens - I wouldn't expect anything less
On paper ( Philips datasheets ) they don't look especially linear, although it may be that they have less odd-order distortion than 5687's ( which don't have much anyway) , or something subtly different in the spectrum .
I don't know if you ever tried them in anything, Nick ? - I notice they are incoveniently a different pinout, so it wouldn't be easy to swap them into an existing DAC unit . They do appear to be similar to 5687 in characterisitics otherwise.

Mark, if you twist my arm high enough I could part with a couple of new, unused, GE 6463.
I think there is one of them in my Audionote copy pre amp.

Interesting, not a valve I have tried, as you say, looks similar to a 5687 but different pinouts.

Yes indeed .
Thanks for the offer Phil, but as you say, they're not expensive or uncommon on EBay. I had a quick look last night and found quite a few.

I notice a review of the DAC 5 in 2003 listed 5687's being in there, so P.Q. must have discovered them relatively recently .

Possibly not, are they not in other AN equipment ?
Perhaps PQ got a job lot ?

Good point, I should check the phonos or pre-amps.

I tried them as EL84 drivers a few years ago and hated them.

But as ever YMMV and all that

I believe the Ongaku amp used them as drivers for the 211.

Where does it say that, Phil ?
I know the original Ongaku circuit was in SP #2 and I'm fairly sure it was 6072 SRPP into 5687 C.F.

There might be more than one version of Ongaku.
Here is the link I posted earlier.

I'm admiring your persistence, but not your clarification skills .
Now I 've found it - in the yellow panel to the right. I thought at first glance that was an advert - silly me .
Yes, sounds like a different ( post-Kondo) circuit.

Yep, thats the Andy Grove (I think) designed AN UK Amp, Interstage coupled unlike the Kondo original.
