#1 Chinese power resistors.

Post by pre65 »

Another tale of woe.

I wanted two 820R 100W Arcol type resistors. Seems it is not a standard value for 100W.

So I looked on Ebay and found some green ones in China, and only £3.90 a pair delivered.

Well, they eventually turned up, but they are no bigger than the 50W Arcols I am using at the moment.Don't think I will risk them.

Had I have checked the dimensions I would have realised.

To be fair, they were delivered quite quickly , given the distance, but compared to a genuine Arcol 50W they look "cheap". :( The old adage " you get what you pay for " seems to apply.

I would try them as a 50W.

I'd be really interested in an x-ray or a tear down of one of those to see how they compare with a genuine Arcol.

Not just in the winding details (diameter, winding style, thermal compound used etc.) but more importantly from an amplifier builder's viewpoint, the electrical isolation.

Arcol HS50s are rated to 1250VDC/RMS and HS100s to 1900VDC/RMS - both are good to 200C - for HV work I just wouldn't be comfortable with a knock-off... it's not as if genuine HS50s & HS100s are that expensive (unless you need loads of them).

I only got the crap Chinese ones cos proper Arcol ones were unavailable in that particular value.

Thinking more about them they may just go in the bin.
