#1 Supports SPDIF ?

Post by pre65 »

I'm looking at possibly building a better computer.

One of the motherboards I looked at (Gigabyte GA-78LMT) says it "supports SPDIF with an internal connector (1 x S/PDIF Out header) but not a dedicated SPDIF socket on the back panel.

How would one get round this ? :?

What are you building the computer for Phil?

Music specific, general desktop or something else?

Well Ray, it needs to replace my current office PC, and also act as a host for my digital music files.

In order to catch up with modern day living, I was thinking of a quad core processor and 4GB (or more) of RAM and Windows 7. An RCA SPDIF output would be useful for my office system.

I'm happy to go secondhand, but preferably with a new pair of 1TB hard drives.

Phil, there are loads of USB to SPDIF converters on ebay, many with isolation o.p Tx and many supporting hires formats. Would open up your choice of MB if scratch building...

Phil, any PCM2704 one will get you running for normal CD, they sound OK ish but for a little bit more the ones based on the CM6631A like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PD04-24BIT192 ... 2597274800 offer better sound quality.

Phil, the chaps have said what I was thinking about using USB...

If you ever change your DAC I think you'll open up better options using USB too.

As a first step, I'm installing a new (1TB) hard drive in the dicky computer.

When (or if  ) it gets back into full working order I will be back with more questions. :)

Windows 7 Pro (32 bit) is installed. :)

I forgot I also need all the Dell drivers, so I've ordered them on a disc from Ebay. Won't get it for a few days so this old laptop will keep me going till then.

Phil, all the Dell drivers are available for download off their web site! ;) If you have an asset number of the Dell you can type it in on their support pages and it will locate all the correct drivers for that system.
