Heres one for the speaker Proffesors....Have a look at the 4 x 12 inch drivers in this cabinet
What's it all about? What was the reason for mounting the drivers like that?

Maybe something to do with the Tom Danley 'Synergy' ?? ....

Hmmm...
Could be inspired by the Synergy, though I'd also expect that it'd improve dispersion somewhat compared to the usual 4x12" cab, which would just put out a 2' wide beam of death in front of it when the 12"s are pushed in the kHz range.

I know that if you put a speaker at right angles to another solid surface, e.g. the floor and/or a wall, you get like a 'reflection' of the driver in the other surface so effectively doubles the surface area of the driver. I wouldn't like to say what happens if the other surface has another driver in it, I would have thought it would just increase the air pressure it's working into? Bad? Good? Indifferent?

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

Ta for the pointers everyone. A cab of this sort came up in a tweakers bass conversation the other day. I had one on loan a long time ago gigged with it. Sounded OK but not great at the time. Other tweaker reckoned it was a different cabinet layout internally.
Neither of us knew why they were made like that, hence thread.
