Have you tried unplugging and re-plugging the ribbon connectors, might just be a bad contact. (?)

He he he !
Thanks Nick .
I'll try Mike's suggestion first ( thanks Mike ) & see if anything happens, then go for the EBay item .
I love it - £10 and free postage .
I wonder how much Audio Note would charge ? !

Well it just occurred to me it's rather like car or bike electrics, look for the obvious first before buying new parts

Interestingly, those A.N. caps on the output are Copper Foil MIO, not PIO ...
I wonder if they are any easier to drive at line-level ?

'Plug and Unplug' worked, Mike
Reliable starting and disc compatability now much improved !
Hence :
"Blood, blood blood
Blood and Fire...
Blood, blood
Blood and Fire...
Ughh!!
Mercy Lord !
There is no more water
to halt the fire
There is no more water

Ughh !
Let it burn, let it burn
let it burn, burn, burn"
D'Oh - now it's jumping
I might buy a spare module anyway !

I'd hoover up one or two of those mechs if you are thinking of keeping your cd player for any length of time....(mechs for my naim are hard to source now outside naim hq who I believe have stockpiled a load).. but then I read the cd player concept is becoming obsolete....

This may not help, but if it's anything like my Philips drives there is, or may be, a preset for adjusting the laser LED current, that is to say its brightness. But there is a warning about going too high.

There's a famous fix on Nintendo Game Cube that involves turning the laser up, but as they say the first fix is free, you eventually burn the laser out. The burn out is certainly true of the lasers used in fiber optics stuff for comms; there's a standard interface to measure the bias etc on them, and eventually the units have to be replaced.
Analogue, the lost world that lies between 0 and 1.

When you fit it, check the hum centre (middle bit the CD sits on), is the same as what its replacing. There are various types, and if they dont match the puck your transport uses the CD will not spin properly. If they are different, its a simple matter to replace the actual laser assembly on the base plate keeping your old motor.IslandPink wrote:Bought a laser/transport :

Also when fitting, take care not to loose the rubber washers and springs and fitting screws.

Your answer betrays a charming assumption that I'll try to do the job here, on my own
From what I saw of the mechanism/connectors etc. when I had it open last time, I think this is a job I'll save up for when I'm at your's, or you come down here to hear my speaker experiments.
