Pretty much Ed. The USB DAC isn't a necessity but promises better quality.

There is another possibility as a squeezebox/raspberry pi alternative:

with reasonably priced hardware here:

I've not tried it myself but have heard some positive comments.

a raspberry pi
a usb dac
squeezelite
a cheap android tablet/phone with the logitech app

is all that's needed to replace a squeezebox

have I got this right?
Pretty much but you'll also need
power supply and USB cable
SD card and something to hook it up to yer PC to stick the program on it
Some software to stick the program on the SD card and another program to set the RPi up

To get up and running in basic form, the DAC isn't needed.

Looks great except the Pogoplug gizmo ain't 30 bucks here but £58 to £89 on Amazon.

Like the idea of USB speakers to create a cheapo Boom. It's an idea I hadn't thought of ... hmmm ... the kids' solution?

I found SqueezePlug easy to use Ed
http://www.squeezeplug.eu/

And the Raspberry Pi forums are a helpful place too - everything you need to know is in there, and there's even a thread dedicated to SqueezePlug

I had a hope that the open source community would come up with something by now.
It's coming, beta by the end of the year, there's a very long thread on the slimdevices forum and some info here using a development platform.

Thats looking promising. This has all the bits needed to get to a Touch replacement

Just trying to catch up with modern technology and have a few questions if someone would be so kind:

Thinking about a pi based thing and controlling it from an ipnone. How does that work? Is it over wifi?
I don't have wifi, is there a bluetooth option for control?
I can get a wireless access point, but if I connect my phone to it, the internet doesn't work - I'm all 3g. Is there another way?

Thanks,
Brian

Good question Brian, and I don't know. I think you can probably get bluetooth adapters for the pi (via a usb port) but I've never tried bluetooth so don't know what it can and can't do. Izzy Wizzy might know, but someone here is bound to http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=35

The PI streamer works best off a wired network. I'm not aware of a bluetooth connection for the remote control app. It can run wireless but I'm not there with that yet. Still have a problem with the USB DAC although plenty of others have it working. Time constraints at the moment.

Hope this helps tho probably not.

Thanks Stephen, probably not the thing for me then. I have a simple setup: laptop - USB - iphone - 3G - internet and it works really well. If I add a wireless access point, the phone refuses to 3G once it is on the wireless - it expects all the internet from there. I could get a landline and broadband, but it's a bit OTT just to run a music playing device. I'll keep looking - there's bound to be a solution somewhere.

Thanks,
Brian

same question from this corner.....

in simple terms, currently, the remote tells the SB what it wants, the SB tells the server via the network, the server puts the goods on the network and the SB takes it off the network and sends it to the amplifier or dac.

great for a wired network...I have a wired network

new method I'm guessing relies on iphone/tablet gadget talking directly to the server....so am I right in guessing that the server controls the client/SB replacement rather than the SB controlling/ordering the server?

My router has a wifi capability but It's switched off....I guess I might have to switch it on.....ooerr!
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
