Agreed! Using a less common DC connector would possibly add to the product longevity too it would seem

I don't know about that, is this essentially a software or a hardware problem? I suspect its the latter...Nick wrote:I had a hope that the open source community would come up with something by now.figlet108 wrote:Sounds to me like someone with a talent for these things should build and market a SBT replacement.... just saying...

I think mpd or squeezelite on the Pi is about as close as you'll get for now with quality being determined by the DAC hanging off the end. Can't get more open source than thatNick wrote:I had a hope that the open source community would come up with something by now.

Not sure about Pi myself tbh, had a play and dont reckon its quite there yet.
RaspyFi and Squeezelite with the appropriate DAC seem to have good reports so what part of the Pi as network player do you not think is quite there yet?
cheers,

Hi Stephen
what sort of gui do you have to control squeezelite?
I've looked at this recntly and can't find any info on the control mechanism..

I use the Logitech app on my phone to control the Touch and the Pi Squeezelite all running off LMS. Works seemlessly as far as I can make out.

I use my Android phone with Logitech's app too and it works fine. Chris Stratmangler recommended a different app once but I've never tried it.
I'm still at the grinning stage with all this technology really. I was in the kitchen earlier and couldn't hear the music I'd left playing upstairs in the project room, so I turned it up from the kitchen with my phone. Bloody marvellous! The cynical b'stard in me though wonders just where it's all going to end and if life as we know it is threatened by huge corporate greed and malevolence. How do I really know my whole data world isn't in someone else's hands? Not that I've got owt beyond a load of ripped CDs and years of photos worth having. I think.

Squeeze Commander is another. Haven't tried it either as the Logitech app seems to be OK. Some find the Logitech app a bit clunky so seem to go for Commander.simon wrote:I use my Android phone with Logitech's app too and it works fine. Ah yes, sound quality. The headphone jack is very average but OK for the kitchen/dining room where I use it. But if I read correctly, peeps have got very good results with DACs so I'm hoping the sound quality issue is solved. Goalposts are forever moving out there in RPi landgazjam wrote:Sound quality Stephen.

It's not really "plug and play for numptys" true enough but if you can push a few connectors together, follow some instructions and type a few simple things, then it is super simple to get going using Squeezeplug.

if I'm understanding this correctly
a raspberry pi
a usb dac
squeezelite
a cheap android tablet/phone with the logitech app
is all that's needed to replace a squeezebox
have I got this right?
