#1 New Boy - Hi from Shrewsbury

Post by Michael L »

This looks like a good place to visit for someone getting into electronics building again. I've so far built a VTA PH15 phono amp - first tube project, and I am part way through a SP14 Preamp kit from the same supplier.
I would like to move on to building things from scratch.

Welcome! When you've got your valve system up and running, pop down to my mate Dave at Creative Audio and show him what real hifi sounds like! :D
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Yes I've been in Creative Audio. Nothing of interest to hifi folk in there.
Just bought a Leak Stereo 20. Tried it out with my Proac Studio 110s and it was surprisingly good. Perhaps it was my modest volume level but the amp seemed to drive the speakers well enough.
I need to upgrade/replace some components in the Leak which is largely
unchanged from new I think.
Can't wait try the Leak with my valve pre and vinyl source but I've been too busy to finish it so I used the Squeezebox earlier. Classical and Jazz sounded very good.

#7 Progress on Leak 20 and Proacs

Post by Michael L »

Well it's been a while since my last post so here's an update.
I think my Leak Stereo 20 is quite good with the Proac 110s but I am on the lookout for some Snell Js as I believe the bass will benefit.
I really like female vocals played through the system.
My kit preamp seems very good though there is an issue with intermittent
low level whistling which I believe my be down to a dodgy valve (12SN7).
It's been a problem to pin down.

I bought a nice PAM valve radio from an antiques shop in Shrewsbury - very nice but was a bit under water when we were there...
