#1 Producer requires opinions!

Post by BasilSimon »

Hi Guys. I'm new to the forum and am already very excited to be amongst fellow members who are real music lovers! I am getting ready to do a release and am actually a little lost in my catalogue! As an artist I am quite a varied producer and each and every track I produce is a whole new animal. That's what happens when you do not compromise to the market trends! More recently I am wondering if being totally true to my own artistic moods is a good move or not since I need to build a fan base who will probably want more of what they personally like from me as opposed to a mix bag. So my question this. Do I stay true to myself and never compromise with the market or do I build a recognizable sound brand that fans can get used to?

I know this could be time consuming, but id really like your help... I am posting a bunch of links below to a string of productions Iv done over the last couple of yrs. Id like to know if you guys like any particular tracks and also does it matter to you as a listener that an album could be such a mixed bag? When answering could you also please let me know your normal musical preferences? And... how was the quality of sound for you? I'm producing in my own home studio on a balcony over the bedroom.
Thanks in advance for your help guys!!

'ang on a minute. Is it a good or bad thing .... yes or no. Umm....

Could we have an option for "sometimes"?
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Hang on a minute...
Don't you think we should have a poll about it?
Having sometimes as an option in the poll, that is

Well, eventually you will have to either give up, produce the music you want to, or just slowly go mad. Better to start getting the fans who like what you do at the start, rather than having to cope with the fans you have leaving while trying to get the new fans later.

I've not entered the poll because there is no option that reflects my view on your music.

I actually took the trouble to listen to the complete catalogue you published.

In general, not alot impressed me, but I did like/enjoy Zoom Zoom, House of the Rising Sun and You are the One.

IMHO, you have a potentially good vocal (I assume it is you) but your compositions could sound so much better with a real life organic band to back you up. I want to hear real drums, guitars, keyboards and support vocals. Personally, I don't like the synthetic alternatives you use....Sorry

Thank you for the great feedback. I too love an authentic band sound however I am one man doing his best with what hes got. There are many great composers / musicians who have taken the same route and they are completely respectable. I guess its a taste thing. I actually love the weird and wonderful sounds this affords me ! Maybe I should stop trying to emulate and plunge full on into synthesis. No compromise. You made a good point. If I cant possibly achieve the real thing then why try right? I may as well go the other way completely! What are your regular musical preferences? artists, acts?

Hmmmm.... interesting point of view. I think I went mad long ago actually (wuff) I am certainly leaning towards just producing what pleases me rather than the compromise. Do any of the tracks i posted stand out for you at all Nick?

Is the poll yes to a good thing or a bad thing?....

I had a quick listen.i did like zoom zoom ( thought it would also work with a good female vocal over it), house of the rising sun was ok too, but not what I buy,
I'm with Greg I really like to hear real instruments well recorded. But I don't mind when i like the music ....

My view is its the type of music that donates what the quality should be like, good recordings get one closer to a lifelike sound , and much of the early 60's jazz stuff that that has little compression , but there loads of really well done modern stuff.
The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

Lol!!!! I'm sorry about the poll, I really made an omnishambles of it didn't I! I cant see how to adjust it now ! Once again thanks for the feedback! I have never thought of myself as a particularly brilliant musician but do believe I can write reasonable songs and sing fairly good too. The rest I do to try to present this. But do also enjoy creating instrumentals too. I too love when a real authentic live energy is captured in a good recording however have always been on the electronic side! I try to improve with every track I write and will continue to do so.

Just my tuppence.

To me its sounds like you've got a proper good grasp of modern recording and production technology and your catalog is very varied, which is nice (IMO). Overall there's a very 'now' sound to all your toons, the vocal treatments in particular. I really like the string sounds at the beginning of 'Integrity'.

On 'Hope and pray'... you ARE Peter Gabriel :) You have achieved your aim  Well done.

Nice work fella.

FWIW, for many years I was umbilically connected to Tascam 4 track portastudio but then children and 'stuff' came along but now they've left home/ran away I've recently got back involved in home recording via a little Boss digital 8 tracker for my Birfdee present. Nothing like the hi-tech stuff you're doing Mr Bazz but its blummen good fun innit recording your own stuff.

 DIY music section!

You can't get much closer to 'the source' when you're the source yerself! If you're all very bad I might have to start uploading my songs too (when I've recorded them...).

DIY music section
Hmm, I was wondering earlier about suggesting making some of them available as the composite parts, there are a few players on here and it might be interesting to see what parts could be added just for fun, but it might add to the sound (or not, and if not, nothing is lost).

Dave thanks for the positive input! I have built up a very strong set of toys over the yrs! I love my studio as it is right now! I too started out with a small tascam portastudio! them was the days lol!!! Fighting hiss!!!
Before that I had one of those really old mono tape recorders with a crappy mic on a coat hanger ! Hows your bass playing Dave? what gear have you got? is the 8 track a digital recorder? can it record at 48hz 24bit? Have you got any recordings of your playing?
