That was definitely Jeff Beck !

Meanwhile , a few thousand miles away and 40 years earlier, The Grateful Dead captured their live performance style in a pseudo-live album of their best material c.1969 . I love this record . Perhaps the finest bit, and one of the greatest GD jams ever is in the middle of 'The Eleven' . It really takes off around 3:15 in this clip, through to about 7:45 or so. Everyone is working so perfectly together , like 7 fingers of one hand :!: ( paraphrasing what Phil Lesh used to say ! ) . It just flows so beautifully, rythmically and tonally interesting all through . One of the greatest bands ever :notworthy:

I wonder how it compares to an American Warner Bros version ;-)

I have the Mobile Fidelity DSOTM which trounced the original English pressing and I have lived in the belief that American pressings were always better than English - more vinyl! (this may not be true, just my belief)

Going back to the original tapes and starting again implies that this will wring the last sweetest juicy drops out of the old Ampex 8 tracks :-)

I shall find out how it compares, Andrew . My current copy is on a green Warners label, in 'Ex' condition , a good but not great example.
I'm expecting the MoFi version will be cut slightly quieter on the vinyl, but be very clean & noise-free , with a more extended top-end, which may or may not sound better overall than the standard one . Because the top-end is more extended, due to the half-speed mastering (I suppose ) they can sound a bit toppy on an unforgiving system .

I wouldn't want to make any generalisation about American vs. English pressings on the basis of Mobile Fidelty, Andrew - they are a pretty special outfit, using top-grade vinyl and selected ( non-digital ) methods .
Otherwise, I tend to think that the best pressings are the first or second pressings done in the country of origin , to be honest. I do suspect the best of the English pressings have a touch less noise than the best American pressings , but I'm not sure, and not a nitpicker on this, if the realism, tone and soundstage depth is there .

Oooh er :!:
Neighbour just delivered the very LP into my hands .... more later ...

Preaching to the converted there Dave !
Standard test track , but also a great LP(s) from start to finish .
Reminds me, I must make the effort to buy a MINT copy of that, and take the LPs immediately out of the cardboard sleeves, into something more suitable .

#87 Cosmic Keyboards

I'm going to match your Cottonwood Avenue , and raise you a Pharaoh's Dance there Dave .
From Bitches's Brew , this lovely radio-friendly 20 minute track, one of the greatest things out there in music ( am I biased ? ) .
Something very special happens from about 15:30 where Joe Zawinul ( keyboards ) gets into a purple patch in his interaction with Miles .
As I tried to explain to Nick one day, it sounds to me as if he's playing forwards and backwards simultaneously in that section . Probably best to listen to the entire track to get into the groove, for best effect though .

1.29 - 2.19.

An enormous creaky door is slowly opened to reveal a room of very fast things!

Well thats what I hear anyway. Simon Philips is set to bonkers, Bill the bassist joins in :-)

Glad you pointed that out , Dave.
I know what I'll be doing for the next 20 minutes .
Are there any other LP's that feature a bass guitar on the cover ??
