#1 Decca arm rewire

Post by Dave the bass »

For my next trick (after finishing my speakers) I'm going to attempt to re-wire my funny old Decca u/p arm.

I've lived with it for a year and a bit now and last night I managed to get it to track brilliantly after redressing the orrible stiff cables that it came with BUT they have to be just so.

I'm guessing that the insulation has hardened over the years and is causing the slight miss-tracking I'm getting especially on inner grooves.

I've ordered some of the Litz wire from Satcure seeing as it's highly rated and cheap,

Any tips?

Oooo, My Brahms-and-Litz wire has arrived, huzah.

It looks like the silk insulation unwinds, is that how it's stripped back>

Did anyone here find a way to accurately remove small bits of the insulation? Iron tip? Fire? Machete? Termites?

Yes, I agree with Darren, burn it off with a bit solder on the tip or your iron.

Yep, concur with the above, that's all I did - use the heat of the iron. The silk charred a little close to where the iron had been but nothing to worry about.

Cheers Simon,

I was going to pass the un-charred silk back to the silk worms what with being veggies and all that :D

Yes thanks Richard, interesting that he had problems with the fraying of the satcure litz :( I'm hoping to have a bash at mine this week.

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh.

This arm is hacking me off, someones bonded the headshell socket to the arm tube. It's supposed to be a grub/set screw, I can't get the 2 apart, looks like super glue to me.

Grrrrr.

The patient lives and WILL play the piano again.

It tracks now, the anti skate actually DOES something and the VTF is consistent.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
