So you did.

They were in separate buildings I should hasten to add. :D

There was talk of a ghostly figure with long flowing locks creeping from the coach house to the main building at 2.30 in the morning.

Remember this amp from the Owston before last?1. Wednesday I finally completed it by ramping the HT up to 600V and cranking the anode current up to 70mA (ooo, ya devil) and thus achieved my all time high of 42W max plate dissipation per channel. TZ40 just shrugged it off. It was good, its massively large and a pickle to set up but at least it worked and sounded good. Huzah.

As a project I learnt a bit from it about +ve grid bias and got that thoriated breathy sound I've heard in other amps.

Inspired, I think its time to move on to another project.

The convoluted start-up procedure is not for your average other family member, I know that :D

Nothing so simple as throwing one switch

Seems just a bit less elaborate than running up Didcot power station and synchronising it to the national grid

^^^

And henceforth, that TZ40 amp will be known as 'The Didcot'!

So young Dave, is TZ40 "Didcot" consigned to room 101 now ?

Yup, time to move onto a new project. Different valves, same approach.

I remember it sounded excellent at that Oweston....

So what valve are you moving on to, or would that be telling?!

Thanks MrT, yeah I was pleased with 'The Didcot'.

Output-wise I'm think 830B, another off-the-radar-possible-no-hoper valve. :) It forces me not to copy what others have done before that way. Plus they're pretty cheap and I have at least 4 if I kill one or two during experimentations.

Onwards, to the project room!
