I think we all know by now what this section is for.

Making some progress now.

I've kept Windows Vista for the time being.
Ripped a handful of CDs with EAC and no apparent issues.

Downloaded Foobar 2000 which has sorted the albums, but won't play anything.
It seems the virtual stop button is stuck, and preventing any other play controls being pressed. Not sure where to go from here.

Also downloaded Amarok, which is perhaps a tad less intuitive but it works well enough.

The USB to spdif gadget should arrive later today, so i might be up and running properly soon.
Much to learn there is.

You might have a problem with your soundcard not being selected for the output.
Look under file/preferences/output, and pick the appropriate device.

Thanks Chris, i'll have a look later on.

Still no luck with Foobar.
I may try a new install later.

Also got to try the new gadget out.

Maybe that'll change something.
Need to find out if it works with Linux as well.

I moved over to Ubunto because Vista was sluggish and i couldn't do much about it.

Some of the Linux Cd rippers proved to be quite poor. One of the better ones was Rubyripper, but it's so unbelievably slow. I'd probably be dead by the time i ripped my CD collection.

However, I eventually found one that has so far produced flac files without any problems. It's a no frills ripper called "Asunder" if anyone's interested, and it even sorted an old scratched CD that generally skips on CD players.

Struggling to get EAC working with Wine. Tried old and new versions but both have issues, so if anybody has experience and some tips, please don't keep it yourself.

Favourite media player at the moment is "Guayadeque". It's the only one that hasn't upset me so far.:)

The Muse Mini Dac /usb to spdif thingy works very well.
Much to learn there is.

This thread seems a good place to ask this.

Laptop running W7, LMS running on same laptop pointing at the folder with loads of flac files as a library. Same laptop also runs Squeeze play, USB DAC connected too feeding external amp.

A question, can I stream hi res out? Squeeze play seems to be holding everything at 16/44....

Via the cottage WiFi I can remote control the squeeze play laptop using the SB app on my tablet which is very handy when using the laptop as a source in the holiday HiFi system. Just the resolution issue holding back holiday hi res replay.

Any ideas?

What's the DAC and did you install any drivers to get your PC to see it?

If you haven't had to install drivers then the DAC will be natively compatible with Windoze, and will be limited to 16/48 maximum resolution.

Currently experimenting with an M-Audio Transit which is 24/96 max. Yup, correct drivers installed.

Squeezeplay seems to down sample any (say 24/88.2) higher res file and reports its doing it when I look at the file being played back its properties states VBR is being converted to 705kbps in Squeezeplay.

Erks! It all works OK and sound alright but summats nagging me (innits!).

This says that it's normal behaviour for Squeezeplay to resample to 16/44.1

Meh! It was all going so well :)

FooBar works at 24/96 but I loose the nice SB UI and graphics and remote control ability using the tablet. Double-meh!

Any other options you know of Chris?

You could always sneak a Squeezebox Touch into your bag and have a USB HDD loaded with tunes ;)

Going back onto Foobar - isn't there an app to permit remote control?

Ha! Yeah done that for about 3 years now. I used to take an SBT + 320GB USB HD away each time but I quite fancied using the HD/Drivers/ USB DAC option of the laptop which goes on hols anyway. Streamlinin' innit! (ignoring the fact 2 x Fonkens + SandyStands + 6EM7 Valve amp get taken away each time too....)

I don't know if its poss to RC FooBar, that'd be handy if the Android tablet could be the RC-ing the Laptop.

Onwards.

A bit of a wide ball for what it's worth.

I recently started to use my laptop to seamlessly deliver audio, upto 24bit 192KHz, via USB. It worked first time and has been fine since.

Library is on network storage
Laptop (Windows 7) runs JRiver Media Centre with DLNA enabled.
USB is a DIYINHK usb>i2s card connected to a Curryman DAC.
JRiver shows up as a renderer in BubbleUPnP on my Android devices allowing remote control if I don't want to us the (very rich) JRiver interface on the laptop.

The setup is for a headphone amp set up for work place etc.

I'm pretty sure that with a suitable mobile device with full usb functionality (like a Samsung Galaxy S4) I should be able to play music to the amp via usb using this;

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... oplayerpro

I'll be getting an S4 in a couple of weeks as my current contract is just about up so will be able to advise further.

Worth a try Dave. There's a little bit of setting up in JRMC but let me know if you get stuck and I'll try to help - no guarantees though!
