#1 Ali's new travelling partners

Post by Toppsy »

Yesterday and Sunday I had a break from veneering the LP storage cubes to make some progress on Ali's new travelling speakers. I think he was inspired by our DTB's small original Fonkens he takes on Hols with him and his missus.

These are the new dMar-Ken7.3 mini onkens for the newly released Mark Audio Alpair 7.3 drivers.

All panels are cut for both cabinets and here is a photo of the one that was glued together yesterday and left overnight to dry. I have yet to add the internal damping, the reason the front baffle is left unglued in place. Lurking in the bottom right is the intended driver.

Ali has chosen the rather expensive 'Ziricote' veneer for these of which I'll post up piccies when it arrives later this week.

Looking good Colin. I think they'll look rather nice in the veneer.

Errrrrrrrrrr I think you guys have totally missed the joke!

Nothing to do with Supertweeters.

All to do with the wife likening the small speakers as a large bird nesting box.

You lot I give up.

I saw that in it. looked very much like a Spring Watch special.

When I was young my mother decided I was a Young ornithologist. I don't recall volunteering for it. When I was trooped off on walks with them I remained mystified as they could all recognise the various species which to me were brown blobs and some of the brown blobs I never saw at all.

eventually when I was about 13 they discovered I was short sighted.

I just thought everyone saw what I did. It was quite a revelation to discover that real life for everyone else was as clear as photographs.

Colin, always nice to see your builds progress?

Is the holey brace centred?

Hi Dave. No the holey brace is not 'centred'. It's offset to the left side of the centre-line and in the other cabinet the brace is opposite about the centre-line to the right all as per the plans but done as mirrored pairs.

It does look though from thr first photo it is centred. But if you trace back the marked C/L you'll see it's offset by 15mm. The thickness of the brace.

Ali's expensive Ziricote veneer arrived by courier late yesterday afternoon. I'll post up some piccies when the light outside improves.

Glad to hear it is just the picture perspective...

And as promised here are the photos of the Ziricote veneer spread out on my dining table. I must admit I don't think the photos do justice. In real life the wood is richer in colour. Very nice.

Onwards I have another 6 storrage cubes to veneer (Oak) on the outside and then machine up the solid oak edging strips. Oh the joy

That looks great Colin, lovely grain. Looking forward to seeing the speakers "clothed"!
