Blimey, that came out of nowhere.

Very sad news. His work with Lizzy was double-awethumne.

This is getting scary.

RIP Gary, you were good.

I saw him just the once, Thin Lizzy, early eighties, Hammersmith Odeon, just three rows from the front. Blindin' gig.

Greg Allman was on the radio this morning. To lose one guitarist in yer band was unfortunate, to lose two smacks of carelessness! Didn't both Duane Allman and Dickie Betts get killed in motorcycle crashes?

Anyway, Greg Allman has just had a liver transplant (he had a few months to live) and made a new blues album. You don't have to live the blues to sing the blues, he said, but it helps. He sounded very rough indeed.

Richard Betts is still with us http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dickey_Betts
You're thinking of Berry Oakley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berry_Oakley

I lost both my parents within a 3 month period. At my Mother's funeral who died last, I spoke this exact sentiment to her friends when in conversation after the funeral. Although I have never had any feedback, I seriously regret ever saying it. It was a bit smart and glib at the time and although the insensitivity has not impacted on me personally, I wonder if it did upset her friends I spoke to. I hate the thought of it and probably will never resolve my personal distaste for what I did at that time.

These sort of comments are well worth thinking about.

I'm sure that you are not alone there Greg.

I think that the funerals of people close to us are times of great grief and stress so it's no surprise that we sometimes say "the wrong things".

Time to let it go now ?

I suspect you are beating yourself up over it far more Greg than those you spoke to would want you to. Funerals are stressful times, that hopefully we don't become skilled in any time soon. I think the generation in their late 80's now (many of our parents) unfortunately had a lot more practice in coping with the loss of friends and relatives in their youth, so I think we set our self impractical standards at how we should behave at those times if we hope to mimic them. And in reality we act like we did at our first dance, we say the wrong things, and we are awkward. Not due to any lack of respect, just lack of practice.

I wouldn't beat yourself up Greg.

I lost my dad on Nov 9th last year, my wife lost her mum 5 weeks later on Dec 16th, so we've been going through a pretty rough patch in terms of grief.

Two funerals in such a short time span so I know how you feel.

If you remember the context of where Oscar Wilde penned the quote it was hilarious. I'm very good at saying the wrong thing and the wrong time - not this one though ... or perhaps!

Anyway, thanks Chris, Berrie Oakley, yeah that's the chap. What has Mr Betts ever done for us, (on his own)? What will Mr Allman Snr.?
