DIY CD player ?

Looking a bit further into this Phil wrt to 'our' NEC CD ROM drives.

If as mentioned over on the WD forum the controller does plug into the IDE port we're gonna have problems (I think) as the 'housing' that the NEC502 sits in only has skuzzy (spelling!) ports.

However (dot dot dot), the actual drive itself DOES have an IDE connector.

So, if you were thinking of going down that IR remote control route you might have to 'break-into' the housing assembly to access the IDE port and dissconnect the SCSSI interface, possblee.

As you know one of my back burner projects is a NEC CD-ROM DIY (ie. cobbled together) CD player. I'm planning on on building 2 linear regulated supplies for the 12V and 5V rails and taking the digital out of the ROM into an external DAC (wow! cutting edge or what!) just to see how it sounds.

Is that a good place to start DAC-wise? it seems to do the higher rates that a lot of our- 'Digi-boyz' here talk about and it's cheap. We like.

Thing is Dave, with the CDR-602 you don't need a controller as the (basic) controls are on the front.

But with that controller and (for example) a Shuttle PC case (with PSU) you could use almost any CD or DVD drive.

I'm fairly set up with two CDR-602 complete units and a spare CDR-502 drive (thanks to you ) but I'm still tempted to buy the controller and "make" a CD player.

I don't think my e-bay DAC does 24 bit, but do you need it for hordinary CD's ?

No, you don't need 24 bit capability for CDs.

No, you don't need 24 bit capability for CDs.

At present I have nothing that plays digital files ('cept the stand alone PC) above CD level but in the long-term I'm interested in these SquashedBockz devices some of you fella's play with and Computer audio....but if you're tempted to go down the digital source route does a bit of forward planning and a 24bit/192Khz DAC make sense? It'd decode (resolve) digital from a normal digital CD player I'm guessing.

If one was going to use a commercially available CD rom or DVD rom internal drive to make a CD player is there any make that stands out as being "better" as regards reading the disc ?

There seems to be 100's available in the £10 - £25 range, but not much above that.

You'd need it anyway as I think the SB upsamples everything. I think.

I was not going to get involved with this CD controller, but I did.

It works after a slight scare with the digital output lead wires.

It's certainly good enough to put in a small form factor PC case and make a linear PSU to power it.
