#1 Squeezebox 3 no more so ...

Post by izzy wizzy »

Hi Guys,

I was hoping for SB3 classic for Xmas but it seems it is a discontinued product.

I would like some feedback on whether I should search for old stock SB3 or go for SB Touch. Or maybe the Duet is they way forward?

thanks,

Stephen

All I can comment on is when I had a Duet in to try, the interface was great, it all looked great, then I heard it, and it was a real let down compared to the SB3.

If you can, get the Touch. It will handle up to 24/96 natively - SB3 is 24/48 maximum.

Definately a Touch. I heard the Duet Nick had-only a quick listen-but I was distinctly unimpressed. The Touch on the other hand is a great sounding bit of kit, even from it's analogue outputs. Add a decent dac and it's even better. Bugs have been pretty much ironed out now and mine works seamlessly. Another good point is you can connect an external drive directly,so no need for a pc. Not heard a comparison, but a lot of folk say it's quite a bit better.than the SB3,and of course will also play 24/96.

Thanks guys. Isn't it odd that the Duet is different to the point of being worse. I thought a manufacturer would standardise on the hardware esp the decoder/DAC bit.

I 'spose I was hoping the Duet would be the go as it leads to expansion around the house.

Might have to be a combined Xmas/birthday pressie :)

cheers,

Stephen

You won't be disappointed, it's a great bit of kit.

Interesting. Can't say I noticed any difference when I switched to a Duet from a SB3, I should try comparing them both. Suppose it should be possible to set them up side by side playing the same track at pretty much the same time.

Synch 'em up on SBS.
Then you only need to pull up the files once :)

Give you music from a remotely serving machine (ie quieter listening environment), without having to use a media player on your machine - the Squeezebox is run by a slim server client.
There are no audio drivers involved in the process.

Richard what are you using to get the sound out of the laptop?

Has Mike moved house ?

How is Mr I getting on with his squeezy thing. Must admit I use Windows media player sometimes on the "office" system.

a hammer and some pliers

.........not really

USB cable to beresford DAC

i guess if the squeeze wotsit incorporates a decent DAC it becomes a lot more value for money

wonder if i'd prefer the sound with one

That is another benefit of using a Squeezebox.
