I just bolted a 401 down to a heavyweight wooden block and screwed down (though deftly decoupled) the ancient Mayware (re-wired by mine own fairly clumsy hands - I spilled the coffee all down my front just now while trying to explain auditory neuropathy to a colleague who had phoned to disturb my precious holi-day); and such coffee!)

VTA right, weight more or less right, he switched on.

Cor it sounds nice even though the 103 cantilever is a bit bent - little phroaaaaaar!

Vinyl can sound so wonderful (through much modded WADpre2 & phony 2, to rebuilt Quad303 to ESS AMT1Es - fabby roos.

Anthony, if you read this, keep your 401 (or give it to ME!!!!!!!!)

I'd try no de-coupling between the arm and the garrard.

IMO arm and bearing want to be rigidly fixed in position in relation to each other.

Mayware arms are stunning! I have one, I am in the process of putting a slighly longer arm tube into it, and rewiring it. They do something that conventional gimballed arms dont.
A thumbs up from me!!!
