#1 New Beefheart Book.

Post by Dave the bass »

Ed, Ed, Ed! Floppy, floppy, floppy... look whats just come out ->

I picked it up in a tiny little record shop in Tenby whilst on Hol's with JTS.

Its sooooooooooooooooooooo-flippin'-perb, I had my head stuck in it a lot lately.

The inside story from the fella that knows.

Both fast and bulbous.

I've had "Lunar Notes" for some time - Zoot Horn Rollo's account. Do you think all the Magic Band will cough up their memoirs? A whole new area of Beefheart completism opens up....

isn't there something oddly non-sequiturish or delightfully oxymoronish about

'A whole new area of Beefheart completism opens up..,.'

Aye well. Is it an occasion of joy or misery for the avid completist when more stuff turns up that they must have?

It's Beatles fans I feel sorry for, first the boxed sets, then the next boxed set "which we haven't cocked up quite so badly as its predecessor, so you'll be wanting to give us yet more money, won't you?"

CB + MB complete-ists will never 'complete' until the Zappa estate releases the 'real' Shiny Beast/Bat Chain Puller (puller puller) surely?

I'm about 300 pages into the book, Drumbo's account is made up of interviews with most members of the various MB's + significant outsiders too. So far only Jeff Cotton as declined to be interviewed its seems.

I've read Lunar Notes, twice. Disturbing and not happy was the vibe I got from Zoot's take on his time with Don.

Drumbo's is following a similar course but he does acknowledge the sheer talent Don had it seems. Drumbo was only 17 ish when he joined the band and he and Alex (Snouffer) just went along for the ride to start with in the book.

Anyone else read it yet?

Oh well, if there's no Antennae Jimmy Semens what's the point? I did buy Drumbo's "City of Refuge" (CD sssh), Jury still out. Thanks for the heads up,DTB. 800 pages is ideal beach reading. Heavy enough to work those pecs turning pages, and when you get tired you can pop it behind your head for a pillow.

Yeah I thought that but Drumbo has so far included interviews with Rockette, Zoot, Jerry Handley, Alex, Doug Moon, Vic Mortenson (sp?) Gary Marker, Guy Webster + many others around the band in the early years.

He does quote from the BBC documentary and cross references with Rolling Stone interviews of the years giving his 'take' on certain events. CB walking directly off the stage and falling onto Bob Krasnow I was reading about last night, still makes me giggle, Ry Cooder was off after that gig  Just like he said on the BBC Doc.
