Might be worth checking YouTube - I found a video of how to dismantle the deWalt NiCad that packed up which was very helpful. I decided to buy a cheap replacement though as I could work out which was the dead cell IIRC.

Problem is the electronc circuitry is designed to prevent tampering, and wont let you just re-cell it as a failed cell triggers the cirquitry which is a one way journey. Not that a clever cooky like Nick G couldnt overcome that, its way over my head. For 28v Milwaukee batteries the problem is the cost of the circuitry that is the obstacle to self repair, from memory its £150, then you still have to get the new cells you need. So a dead professional use li battery is pretty well uneconomic to repair. Maybe cheap amateur batteries arent so tightly controlled.

If that's true Paul, it looks like someone should probably introduce the makers to this:

I would also mention that the Lion battery management and balancing boards are also very cheaply available on AliExpress etc. I've looked at the circuitry and the boards seem to be clones of reference designs using known battery management chips.

#2 son has collected the Li cells used in vapes and using the AliExpress boards has made some really nice rechargable packs.

Madly, vapes uses Li rechargable cells even though they are nominally single use and not rechargeable in situ, so are great for small cell harvesting. He simply asked all his mates who vape to save them up for him.

Fwiw, most manufacturers' battery packs are repairable, though obviously sometimes it can be a bit of a specialist job.

Turns out I’m behind the times. I can now get a BCU kit and hardware at a very reasonable price, Image prices for that bcu alone were between £150 and £200, when I last looked probably a year ago. Glad to see this.

Also in merchants yesterday was a rep for EPH who make a very easy to use and to install wireless programmable thermostat. Nowadays if it fails you can get from the merchants effectively the innards, just flick out the old and put the new in. This shows industry is lining up to that paper. Its a good direction.

Double layer granite Garrard 301.
https://www.peakhifi.co.uk/cgi-bin/ecom ... &db_pid=18

The 301 is Ray Clark's 'solid chassis' prototype, so it still has the 301 motor and through-hole fixing bolts unlike the current offerings: https://www.classichifi-shop.co.uk/prod ... -black-20/

And no, I wouldn't be able to afford it at current prices!

That is exactly why i dont have a cat... a stupid dog cant get up there

On a different note, i have finally got my hearing back after having an infection which affected my chest, throat, nose and earoles. It woz orrible, moving my head changed my hearing, everything was like it was underwater and my balance was like that of a drunken sailor bouncing off the bulkheads. Had to actually go to the doctors for the first time in about 5 years, normally i can shake off the usual coughs, colds, flu and other lurgs pretty quickly, not this time. Antibiotics required to shift it.

Went of a farm walk yesterday specifically aimed at my beekeeping group - one of our members has operated a sustainable mixed farm for 35 years. It was a wonderful way of spending a couple of hours on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. My first outing since the op last Saturday.

One the the things that was mentioned was the free Merlin bird song identification app from Cornell Labs - iOS or Android. You need to download the rather large UK database so do that on WiFi... but it is a WONDERFULL app...

Just this morning, by checking round my office, in just a couple of minutes we heard: Magpie, goldcrest, blue tit, great tit, dunnock, blackbird, wood pigeon, rook, carrion crow, robin, wren, blackcap & chaffinch. We know we have many others, e.g. coal & long-tailed tits, cuckoo, wagtail, various woodpeckers, tree creepers, nuthatch, little, tawny and barn owls etc. but they weren't singing early this morning! Obviously, not everything is covered and it's not 100% accurate (however apparently pretty good), but it's a great way to understand a bit more of what's around you.

Strongly recommended. Lots of species photos & individual samples etc. from the massive database so that you can train yourself. Well designed app too...

I have a similar thing running on a Raspberry Pi with a mic hanging out of the kitchen window. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/classi ... irdnet-pi/

My son introduced me to it a while ago and has the same setup running in his garden in Somerset. It’s pretty accurate but it does make the odd mistake. I was excited see that his had picked up a common crane, as they’ve been introduced not far from his place, but when I played back the recording it turned out to be my wife sneezing…

Never realised before how much owl activity there is round here.

Today’s tally so far:

I’m a bit dubious about the moorhen.

True. Moorhens can be dodgy...

When you first mentioned this, I was determined to set it up. Damn. Another project. More standby power...

...and talking of standby power, it creeps up on you...

One thing I've added to my Emporia Vue2 system (mentioned elsewhere) is that they've now introduced smart plugs that integrate with the system so you can monitor fridges, your AV system on standby... and in my case the house networking system (all the PoE APs, switches, routers etc.).

Turns out that the house networking setup uses almost exactly 0.7kWh/day... over a year that's about 255kWh, which at 42p/unit is £107 p.a.

To be fair, not much I can do about it. One other thing I found is that our big double-door fridge-freezer uses pretty much the same amount of power and that's supposed to be an A+++ unit...

Don't know yet how much power all the nixie and Panaplex clocks, raspberry pis etc use...

Dead simple to set up. Assuming you’ve got a spare pi, you just need one of these

UGREEN USB Sound Card, USB to...

And one of these in a suitable housing. I used the body of a fancy rca plug.
