Renewed with LV, £317. Still a hike but the cheapest of the recognised insurance brokers. Made sure the details where exactly the same as Direct Line...thieving @%£$%£$

Aha, thanks for your sensible reply Neal. You did better than I. I too am put off by silly names insurance companies. Maybe they are OK, though - who knows.

The key thing is that most of these companies are BROKERS and NOT insurers - they shop around for the cheapest insurance they can get and charge a fee for that. The actual insurance is laid off to a third party like Swiss RE or Trinity etc.

So, at the end of the day you can go to different brokers and end up with the same insurers. The polices (excesses etc.) may be slightly different, but little changes really.

From what I hear from colleagues in the industry, the insurers are bricking themselves at the mounting cost of claims involving EVs and hybrids, so are mitigating that risk by spreading the premium increases across the board, essentially meaning that ICE drivers are subsidising the real cost of EV-related claims.

This, of course, may just be apocrypha.

Not quite. The actual underlying insurer is United Kingdom Insurance Limited which, whilst part of the same group, is a different company. i.e. they are really just sales outlets for United Kingdom Insurance Limited as opposed to a full broker who would cast around multiple insurers for supposedly the best deal for you rather than the best commission for them!

I worked for uki for a number of years, they underwrote at the time probably 60 different insurance schemes including big brands (dl, churchill, prudential ect), manufacturer insurance schemes and various specialist insurers.

All aimed at a different demographics, different risk involved and thus different rates, excesses and loadings for exactly the same basic product.

When you see what costs are actually involved at the back end, it is sometimes unbelieveable. A simple bump in exceptional circumstances can cost millions, and that isnt an exaggeration.

And it all gets passed on in the loadings.

Just had the weirdest day. I kept some bits back from my old car which was written off, when it went for salvage. Been selling them off. Today someone turned up to collect some bits, in my old car Ffs. He’s a dealer who bought the car from the salvage company, he said it required half a days worth of work and a new grill to make it right. Cannot understand why the insurance company sent a guy around to assess it and wrote it off. He’s selling it fixed for £2.5k less than the insurance company gave me…….. no wonder the premiums are going up. I had assumed there was something more wrong with it than just cosmetic, after the shunt.

Similarly - years ago passed on an old BMW for spares, and posted the slip off to DVLA that it was scrapped. Couple of months later got a parking fine letter for Southend High Street (parking meter had run out). I wote back saying as far as I and DVLA were concerned it's scrapped, you can go to them for proof. Never heard any more about it!
