Post by pre65 »

Hi-having bid on several variacs on e-bay recently, and not bid high enough (last one was £101) i noticed Maplin do a 0.75A model for £31.14.

Is 0.75A enough ?

I see they do an 8A version for £59.98 -now discontinued !!!

2A is about 500watts at mains voltages, so at 500v you should be able to draw 1 amp, or 500mA at 1000v or at 250v 4 amps and so on.

I don't think anyone but perhaps Paul, Nick and Darren with their SE behemoths needs that much HT at that kinda current.

cheers,

2A should be good for most things.

Hi-as my Bluebell parcel (no-not the flower) has not come today i have managed to get my variac up and running.

I have mounted it on a bit of ply and made a terminal block from delrin.

Also i have left space for a 3 pin socket.

Tested it out on the Yamaha DD turntable, and they both work fine.

Hi-now i have the variac can i ask about "re-aging" capacitors.

Is it just ramping them up to the max specified voltage ?
