New bod (sort of)

Hello all... another new user here though I have been lurking a bit. At least I'm new to "audio-talk"... some of you may remember me as "DaveTheVinylJunkie" from the WAD DIY forums (and a couple of Eggfests), whose actual DIY credentials never got beyond building a couple of amp kits.

With much water having since flowed under the bridge and much money having been spent on commercial gear later owing to my sheer idleness, I thought it was about time I got serious about firstly learning how all this stuff works, and maybe seeing if I can come up with something that betters my current amplification of choice.

But first, I have to research. Where to start............

OK current system rundown:

"Classic HiFi" rebuilt Garrard 301 with new solid chassis (the first one he made) in a plinth of my own design based on Loricraft fundamentals;
Thomas Schick 12" arm, Ortofon SPU 90th Anniversary;

Whest PS30RDT phonostage;

ModWright LS100 preamp on order with built in 24/192 DAC;

Fi 2A3 monoblocks;

Horning Aristoteles speakers (96dB sens).

The Fi's are regarded as something of a benchmark in terms of commercial gear so it would be interesting to see if they can be bettered by a well thought out DIY design. I have every confidence they can be, given the collective design talent that exists on these forums.

I've done away with the CD spinner now, all my digital is being migrated to hard disk, the idea being to also experiment with high resolution downloads sometime in the near future.

Most of that seems to be near perfect to what I know. I can't say anything about speakers though, I know nothing. But a 301 12" arm an spu and a 2a3 amp hard to beat.

I'd dreamed of owning a pair of Hornings for years, then the UK importer/dealer (Jim at Audiolincs) was doing a "VAT free January" if I recall, and this was just as the pound was starting to collapse against the Euro. And I thought what the heck, I'll never get the opportunity to own them at this price again, and they'll likely be the last speakers I'll ever need.
