#1 switch mode power supplies

Post by Paul Barker »

A guy from Hull who designs switched mode power supplies for a living just collected some tools he won on ebay.

Interesting they are now working at 500 megahurts with some specialist stuff.

The problems they have are geting core material which is effective at those frequencies. Apparently it is available, but significantly it only works when the temperature is above 70 degrees C.

The salient point for us is that should we decide to use a power supply from something else for our purposes we should be aware. You might decide to run it cooler because in our normal field of electronics cooler is better. Always helps to be aware of what others are doing and why.

So if you find a power supply and scope it and it's very high, don't put too small a load on it. It must run hot to work.
