heres a risky little thread and no mistake.......
I'm seeking opinions, no bullshit, no waffle, from those that have experience of running 2 or more of the following in their own amps....please, if possble:
Tribute
Hammond
AE
Sowter
application is SE, moderate current...don't mind comparing standard with amorphous but deffo no silver.
Kind of like a poll but I don't know how to set one up on this forum.
I'll be outside the guildhall at 10am on Saturday if anybody wants to come and throw bricks at me.

You've got some bottle Ed, I'll give you that .
I have the previous Hammond 1627SE 2.5k and AE c cores, also 2.5k. AE better and cheaper. IMHO and IME.
Do you have directions to the Guildhall so I can join you?

Hi Ed-NOT an answer to your question !
Nor bull shite or waffle !!
When i select an output transformer i realise that sound quality is important but also "value for money" and "flexibility".
By flexibility i mean perhaps multi taps for 2.5K + 3.0K + 5K and 4/8 ohms.
The best value and most flexible i have purchased are the James 6123HS from Sandy on e-bay (HK or Taiwan if i remember) which i use on my 45 amp.
From previous topics on WD forum it seems these OPT are widely respected,i believe Andrew I has had some in the past.
Can i bring a wet sponge ?

Hi again-perhaps we could have a SE output transformer shoot out at the next Yorkshire event ?
For my ECL82 Dodd special i purchased a pair of 5K (4+8 ohm) Tomiko toroidal output transformers, and they are fitted in with solder tags so would be relatively easy to remove for you to try.

Yes, but what would it show, other than which transformer worked best with that ampHi again-perhaps we could have a SE output transformer shoot out at the next Yorkshire event ?
I think Ed is asking the question in a good way, I can't answer as I only have one of the list.

Yes,i agree ! But is that not what Ed is after ?
Seems from my experiences with sourcing OPT for the PT15 that primary inductance is very important for some valves (PT15 & 211 to name but two).

Hi Ed
In my experience Hammond 1627s sound great with 2A3s and EL34s and were great value until they upped the price. The Sowter SE transformers I had and which Steve now has are absolutely superb, but they are far more expensive. (£300 per pair) You pays yer money and takes yer choice.

Yes well, and there is O-Netics and I've yet to think up a use for them!
There might well be a grudging and tenuous agreement that all things considered, AE C cores / amorphs are just ticket - might be
Who could possibly have encyclopaedic knowledge about such a tiny area of life; SE output transformers in practice, discuss!
And what would it take to be persuaded by any one advocate?

Perhaps if Ed was more specific about the valve and circuit he was thinking of there might be more "accurate" info available.

keep it coming chaps......when I have the data I can turn it into information....logic is what we do here, or at least used to.
