#1 Boxes, Custom ( Alu) ?

Post by IslandPink »

Anyone know of a supplier who can make a 'nice' custom aluminium box ?
I can't get the right thing for my Pass labs F4 amp build , due to the 4" deep heatsinks that go down each side . Want to make this a 'final' item in the system ie. neat. I can get those front panel people to make me a nice front-piece .

I would have thought your local sheet metal works would give you the best deal, especially if it is a small outfit that specialises in 1-offs.

When I built Ian's F4's he got some Ali boxes made locally with a screw down top plate. I cut holes (with a grinding wheel) in the sides and fixed the heat sinks to the reaming edge. Then he got a metal skin that covered the front and top. Hard to describe but it worked out well. The ali box itself was dog rough, with welded corners, but the skin and heat sinks hid it out of sight.

Local fabricator is best, except the trouble I had was A. finding someone who actually wants to do it, too many even small places now are using CNC which costs a fortune just to program; B. folds are complicated for some reason.

Thanks Chaps
Why didn't I ask you 3 months ago ?... :?

That HiFi2000 Italian link has a box that may just do the job . I could hack the heatsinks down from 340 to 320mm I think . Otherwise maybe custom with a local metal supplier as Nick says .
I will have to cut big holes in each side to allow the signal boards with the Mosfets to attach directly to the heatsinks as Nick says . The front can be neatened-off with a nice front panel .
Hmm , food for thought .
I will get out all the bits , lay them out and have a look at that Italian off the shelf item dimensions first .
Cheers
