#1 Chalfont Acustics.
Hi all, I have not been on here for a long time and now WD has gone I shall try and contribute. So, last year I purchaced a Teac V8000S cassette deck as my Nak. was getting poor, I looked at getting the Teac serviced and found the above place who told me he is the only Teac dealer in the UK, so I took it to his address, this turned out to be his house and he said he worked from home, I was very reluctant to leave the deck with him as he said that the heads would be worn but, I did leave it. Two houres latter when I got home there was a message that said a spring on the head block had been steached, the heads were worn, the pinch rollers were no good, so it was pointless doing a service, I replyed, I will come and collect. He wanted £80 plus VAT for doing almost nothing, a war of words erupted, but I gave him £60, when I got home an email requested more money, I told him to shove it and called him a scammer. Others have also said he is a con man. Teac Japan has never heard of him. Give this arshole a very wide birth. Bob

Being fair... As a sideline I help people fix the electronics in older heat pumps when spares are no longer available.
£40/hr is not cheap, but not unreasonable. I recently had a Sanyo air source heat pump controller board with a suspected fault. The board was fine (the fault was somewhere else in the system) but I still charged them £80 plus p&p for the couple of hours it took me.
The key thing is that I let them know in advance what the "no win" rates were. It's not "doing almost nothing" - you are paying for time, equipment and most importantly, years of knowledge and experience.
Edit: I see you posted a 1 star review on Trustpilot (https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/chalfont-acoustics.com) in August 24 with a different version of this story and 6 months later here - you are obviously bitter about your experience - posting this in a public forum is probably not helpful, especially when you get facts wrong. It'd be interesting to get his side of this story. The version you typed above is very different from the version you put on Trustpilot - the version there shows he spent a lot of time on this.
Tascam Europe list Chalfont Acoustics as their Teac service agent - see https://tascam.eu/en/service-uk - Teac have been the same as Tascam since 1973.
I see only positive reviews (apart from yours) - please give a reference for these "others" who you claim also say he's a "con man".

I am not going to get into argument with you Jack, and may be the two stories are not identical, this man called Joe did not even take the cover off the Teac, he apeared to do almost nothing but told me in no unsertane words that the deck was scrap. It was then sent to a Teac service center in Belguim, they did exactly what I asked them to do, there was no mention of a streached spring, worn heads or bad pinch rollers, it came back and is still working good, keep clear of this jocker, end of story. The two stories are far from identical, no "maybe" about it. You called the guy a "con man" and said others had too, plus calling him "an arsehole" and also implied he wasn't an authorised Teac repair. It's borderline libel. Lots of small businesses operate from home - it saves a fortune in overheads and does not in any way imply that they are somehow not a legitimate operation. Did you actually ask for a VAT number? - in the UK it's difficult to find the VAT number from just a trading name, but it's a serious criminal offence to charge VAT and not be registered for VAT, so it's HIGHLY unlikely that they would falsely do this. You gave cash, with no VAT, so you won't get a company receipt for that - obvious if you think about it.bob orbell wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2025 9:31 am I am not going to get into argument with you Jack, and may be the two stories are not identical, this man called Joe did not even take the cover off the Teac, he apeared to do almost nothing but told me in no unsertane words that the deck was scrap. You've not produced any evidence about the "others" who "also said he is a con man" and contrary to what you implied, he's most certainly an authorised Teac repairer. In your mind you've had a bad experience, however you seem to be making pretty damning public statements which you can't or won't provide supporting evidence for, plus making statements which are demonstrably incorrect, inconsistent between versions, or just poorly researched.
I don't know who this individual is and I have no knowledge of this company, but I really don't like the public slagging off of someone in a public forum, especially when your stories contain so many inconsistencies and factual errors. If you have a genuine issue with them, go to trading standards and quit whining about it.

Legal view. Calling some one a con man is actionable defamation .
The only defence available to such an accusation is one of truth. Fair comment or writers opinion is not available.
I have not read anything which would render the accusation true

But you have never met this individual and heard the bulshit he talks, then tries to take a lot of money from you for doing almost nothing except telling you you product is just scrap. I now wish I had punched him. Bob

I think the main reason why Europeans no longer want to travel to the USA is the big time difference. For me, it's now 7pm. In the USA it's now 1933.
