router guest access

bit of a long shot...
Seb has brought a chromebook home from school, seems all pupils are given one. So I thought I'd turn on the guest network on the linksys router(never switched it on before).

well, I can't get the damned thing to work...switched the guest network on, set the password ok. Router says clients should connect to the network as usual and then load the browser and the browser will ask for the password....

makes sense

but the the browser is denied access to the login url/page.

much googling and a few adjustments to firefox about:config ....but no joy...

doesn't work for firefox or opera....or web on linux

anybody got any experience of this?

thanks for that, it's exactly the problem I'm having...seems I'm not alone.
I found quite a lot of links to folk guessing at ways round the problem, but nothing that looks like a solution...

edit: managed to do it for firefox by adjusting the banned ports override parameter
seems if this is done for firefox and login screen is filled then all subsequent browsers can access the web....

now to see if it's the same deal on linux....

result! works on linux as well

I have to admit I don't fully understand the ramifications...If you're willing and able can you comment on the theory that:

If I unlock the port...do the login for the client and then lock the port afterwards....will that circumvent the risk...
I only say that because I'm thinking the only time there is access through port 10080 is when the server is presenting the log in screen and setting access. Subsequent access is allowed out on the sub net as usual.....

do you think I've grasped it?
