#1 PC time lapse software.

Post by pre65 »

I've set up a digital camera in the kitchen, connected to my no 2 PC by USB cable, to see if it will identify if I still have mice, and if so where they are coming from.

Is there a way of making the hard drive record as a movie, and if so what drive space would I likely need for eight hours of recording ?

Or, perhaps a time lapse of (say) 5 seconds to reduce the hard drive space.

The camera is a USB Logitech @ 720P

Light levels may be a problem and I'll see how that goes tonight. If it's a problem would a low level light in the kitchen stop the mice coming out to play ?

EDIT.

Found this, might do the job ?

Thanks Neal.

I've got it set up on motion detection, and when motion is detected it puts the recorded bit in a file, but the file is not in the location specified. :?

I had to put a small light in the kitchen to get a picture, so I'll have to persevere to either find these files, or find out what I'm doing wrong.

Seems it was saving each mp4 clip as a picture !

Still struggling on, perhaps you can see why I hate anything complicated on computers.

Well Greg, I got so confused with the whole thing, I had to go and read the instructions for use.

Now I'm even more confused, as I still can't see a way to save the video clips. :(

Perhaps I'll look for some other software, but that will be a job for tomorrow.

There should be an images to movie option, it’s a while since I’ve used it TBH

Edit. Yes it’s under the file menu. But you can recorded to video as well as file....

Ok, I saw that but didn't understand what it meant, although, in hindsight I should have done.

I really need a camera that will operate in no light next.

That would sell for a few quid :-)

Whats the visual frequency range of mice?

Yes, I imagined a USB infrared camera would be a few beer vouchers.

Perhaps there are plans on the internet for a mains powered mouse zapper ? Our Jack (Nick) has probably built one. :)

In the control panel there are options.

file
ftp
http
stream
motion

all can be selected,or not.

I've been using file and motion.

Motion is self explanatory, so what is the video option ?

stream says it is for external use via the router.

There is a video function on the webcam, but no motion sensing.

That will work but you realise it’s a networked camera not USB? Depending on the camera these types can call ‘home’ via email or FTP or save to local SD card. Motion detection is built in on many, check the specs. First....
