#1 Ultrasonic clean CDs

Post by pre65 »

I thought I'd asked this question before,maybe ?

Has anyone tried cleaning CDs in an ultrasonic cleaner, and if so was there any noticeable effect ?

Yes, I have, I had access to an Ultrasonic bath at a previous place of employ. I had a CD that i bought in a charity to shop that was 'sticky' with jam or summat so I put it in the Sonic bath and the sticky jam came off and the CD played.

Ooooo I have access to an ultrasonic cleaner that could do cds. Otoh a good breath and a wipe from my hanky seems to do the job.

Not quite , I suspect the same would have been achieved with a clean cloth , isopropyl alcohol and some elbow grease .

Quiet probably, but why do that when you have a bath ready to do the work for you.

Note, he never said that his method was any better than any other, just that it was a method.

Just to clear things up, the only reason I cleaned the CD in the Sonicbath was because I'd been working on it, repairing it actually. We used to have a HiFi system at work at the last Workshop, hence playing CD's at work and the availability of a Sonicbath at the same time.

It's not something I do at home.

Mainly because none of my CD's have Loganberry Jam residue on them.

:)

Perhaps I can rephrase the question.

Has anyone noticed a change in sound quality when a cleaned CD is replayed ?

In that a clean CD no longer hops, skips and jumps it could be said to sound better.

How about the claim that has been made that a CD copy of a commercial CD sounds better. This has been remarked upon in the past...

the o/p asked for noticeable effect . I was trying to clarify if any one was prepared to say "ultrasonic cleaning" is superior to elbow grease in respect of reproduced sound heard

this stems from my hypothesis that much of efficacy around record cleaning machines over manual cleaning is hype and speculative .

Mr Brooks new record cleaning solution partner got rather annoyed with me for suggesting this ,he did however offer no cogent argument , evidence or fact .

ps- to avoid misunderstanding I am perfectly prepared to accept the superior convenience and ease of use of r/m

What you need to realise DQ is that 95% of Dave (le Bass)'s posts are to be taken tongue in cheek, and the other 6% are mistakes.
