#1 Surface mount resistors.

Post by pre65 »

Does it matter if surface mount resistors are soldered in upright rather than flat ? (ie the narrow side top and bottom)

Only if they need full contact with the copper pads as heat sinks.

Have been used soldered direct onto stepped attenuator rotary switches so not a problem otherwise.

Probably doesn’t matter. but its wrong.

Doesn't matter except as noted re thermal management.

Note that joint stress is also important if you are putting these on something that flexes, as there is obviously no lead or play, so dry (mechanically failed) joints may become a concern.

I understand that, but it might be a case of that way or no way. When I did Andrews filament module that was how I did it and it seems to work OK.

It has been suggested that MELF surface mount resistors might be easier to solder ?

Personally I don't like MELFs - they always roll away when I'm trying to pick them up :(

(BTW, DtB, that was "MELFs", not what you were probably thinking of).

I have soldered single core wires to the ends, where the wire lies alongside the edge of the solderable bit, if you see what I mean. Allows to be used like a leaded component.

Appendix: I'm talking about the flat rectangular ones. I agree never liked the look of MELF's :D
