#1 Phono Stage Question

Post by Ali Tait »

Like to pick the brains of the panel please.

Would the cap in series with the resistor feeding the EQ network in a phono stage have much effect on SQ?

The stage is similar to Nick's JFET - like the one I brought to Owston.

Yes, it is in effect a coupling cap. However, make sure you don't use a cap that may be leaky, I have seem PIO being used there that when driving the high impedance RIAA stage let leak and the following valve runs away. Also avoid too large a cap, the inductance of too large a cap will also not help the sound.

Ah, Sound Quality ?

In that case , I can answer by means of a rhetorical question :

Is a pig's arse pork ?

I would suggest a Mundorf Zn, or a Rel-Cap PCU in that location.
PIO would also deaden the low-level detail and HF in this application aside from any leakage issues.
Can I go now ? :D
