I think i used two lengths of CAT5 twisted together for a flying lead. And, looking at where the SPDIF needs to be taken from, it's two legs of a surface mount chip. Shocked
Audiofile CD transport.

Phil, I think I've got around 100metres of salvaged CAT5 cable in the garage; grabbed from a skip when they were doing some building at work. Anyway, if you need any... I can guarantee that a 100metre long flying lead made of CAT5 cable will make Daniel O'Donnell sound even better.al newall wrote:

Cheers Ray.
I took the plunge this morning to do the SPDIF out conversion. The two legs on the chip that needed lifting responded to the tip of a scalpel, no heat needed - YIPEE.
Got the other wires in place and 3 resistors no problem. Biggest headache was finding a spot for the RCA phono socket, but an intricate alloy bracket and some bodgery on the plastic case soon sorted that out.
So, it actually works on SPDIF through the DAC.
Must admit the initial appraisal is not as euphonic a sound as before, but perhaps more accurate. More listening required.

Not much news on this.
After two CDs use the heat from the PSU causes skipping problems.
I've now got some 8 core wire (7 cores needed) to move the Sony PSU out of the case, so hopefully I can try that soon.

The PSU has been jury rigged to sit outside of the case.
Just playing a CD to see if the last problem was heat related.
More soon.

The transport will now play discs cleanly, but I'm not convinced about the sound quality.
It has certain attractions, but overall there is something not quite right.
Today I have collected a possible gem of a DVD player ( £13 pounds worth) and tomorrow I will try it in the system. If it works out I will reveal the details.

OK, the Playstation project is now a bin job.
The new player is a Cambridge Audio DVD 57 DVD player. Opinions on the web seem to indicate it is a pile of poo, BUT an interesting article I found suggested there were three versions, and version three was much better.
My one is "revision C" so I think I have the "good" one.
First disc in this morning is a bit of Mozart, and the initial impression is very favourable, a more "solid" sound than before.
I'll try a selection of music before making any more comments.

The DVD57 is in the system to stay.
I find it difficult to describe sound, but to me this is just "better" than my previous best. Not by a huge margin, but enough for me to notice.

Yep.
I think people get a little carried away with these projects, and imagine great results.
I built a new linear power supply for my PS1 and it still didn't excite me in any way.
Never regretted doing it though.
Sometimes you just have to find out for yourself.

Much to learn there is.
