#1 Linn Sara's with Linn Powertek

Post by Unfold »

Afternoon all,

I'm still very new to the world of serious hi-fi but I'm doing well so far with my research and with the bits I'm managing to accumulate (seems the appropriate word for it  )

I have a set of Linn Sara's that use an XLR as their connection

I also have an old Linn Pre/Powertek combo that allows bi-wiring (i hope i'm getting the terms correct here!)

I have some 4 core speaker wire and a couple of female XLR's am I correct in thinking that i could solder my wire as per the attachment?

Thanks for the assistance :)

or should i solder the 2 negatives to connection 3 shown in the original post?

Thanks for any advice it will be greatly received :)

The best way i can think of is to remove the xlr socket from the saras and take a look. Xlr is usually 3 pins, if these are biwire capable via the xlr there will probably be a common negative terminal.
If not, you will need to know which pins are in use.
Once you know this you can wire the plug accordingly

Thanks Ant,

I'll have a look into the socket once the radio program i'm enjoying finishes.

FYI, this is the info on the back of the Sara's:

Quick question... Do your Sara speakers have 2 XLR connectors on the back?

I'm thinking that the diagram on the back is generic for 2 versions of the speaker, passive and active.

With pin 1 always listed as +VE PROD. TEST ONLY there are only 2 wires available to connect to your amplifier per XLR connector. First guess is pin 1 bypasses part of the crossover for test purposes.

A short web search found the statement that LINN offered their speakers in 2 versions- passive with internal crossovers and active with no crossovers in the box.

#7 Wiring of XLR connector

Post by exile490 »

Hello,
Did you ever sold the configuration of three wires when soldiering the xlr connector into the speak cable. I have the same type of Linns Saras you have, with one xlr connector per speaker. I attempted a soldiering job, and while both drivers operated, the speaker sounded muffled and I'm sure the speaker is good to go. So I'm thinking something went wrong with the wiring set-up. Can you tell me how you wired the connector to your cables? Much appreciated. Thanks, Michael
