#1 Neutrik speakON connectors
What are people's feelings about these vs. traditional binding posts?
Just starting to think that I might want to build another pair of speakers...

Blank canvas ATM - rather liked http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/markaudi ... build.html using Alpair 12Ps... but that's purely an emotional statement. I'm open to any reasonable argument...
Will be for both my solid-state amps and both SE & PP tube amps...
Don't know a lot about speakers - definitely my weakest area - its 30 years since I last built a pair...
I'm fairly useful in the woodwork shop though...

2 pairs of speakers then? very unlikely to get damping to suit both types in one pair of speakers..bass will likely be wayward with one type of amp. ** edit: unless your SS has particularly high op impedance. Will be for both my solid-state amps and both SE & PP tube amps...
re binding posts...price is a consideration...I've never found anything wrong with good old fashioned banana/spade types.
as always YMMV...
If you find an alignment that suits both SS and valves please let me know by PM, we'll keep it secret

I wasn't thinking before I typed I have a set of KEF XQ-Five for the SS stuff - the new speakers will be only for valve amps...ed wrote:2 pairs of speakers then? very unlikely to get damping to suit both types in one pair of speakers..bass will likely be wayward with one type of amp. Will be for both my solid-state amps and both SE & PP tube amps...

I've sold the Beyer ET-1000s & the Perreaux 2150B & SM3 (all at AudioJumble this Spring), so in that picture only the KEFs are left, i.e,. I now have some space

They have now arrived within the commercial industry and are commonly referred to as Z plugs. Variations can be had with lumps of brass at the connection end etc. just do a google on Z plugs. I like to remain with the original as in my link, and rely on my own soldering competence. If I don't use the plastic cover, I substitute with heat shrink.
Someone discovered them recently. See http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthre ... ap-upgrade

IMO you don't need 'em on domestic HiFi stuff, however... if there's a chance of the connectors rattling loose, getting tripped over and disconnected by drunk punters and are part of a PA system being erected and dismantled a lot then SpeakOn's are great IME.nickds1 wrote:What are people's feelings about these vs. traditional binding posts?

Oh dear, now we are looking for £400 of capacitors for the midrange.

Neutrik speakON connectors are the best IMHO (30A, 250V rating with a contact resistance of 2milli Ohm). Try to find something else that's as reliable, idiot proof, touch proof and short-circuit proof. I would always use 4 pole then active cross-overs are an option later as they are not much more expensive than the 2 pole.
